Assorted Ganbare Pro

ASUKA (Veny) vs Haganne Shinnou, Ganbare Pro 8/22/2020

Surprisingly very good big match. Opening had some scrappy disdainful kicks before ASUKA establishes her superior agility over Shinnou in neat ways. Shinnoue then proceeded to work over her leg. Really good legwork, especially dug all the spots where Asukas leg was caught in the ropes. Finishing run had lots of nifty moments and counters. Resisting the Ranhei felt epic, and while Asuka was never gonna sell that legwork all the way to the end it wasn’t exactly blatant no selling either. The spot where she struggled to lift Shinnou and then went for a takeover instead pretty neat. Her spinning wheel kick is also one of the best I’ve seen in a while, really hit Haganne in the face like a baseball bat. Shinnou also looked really solid in this. Quality stuff, probably one of the best matches of that cursed year 2020.

Shuichiro Katsumura vs Cherry, Ganbare Pro 4/24/2021

Judo jacket match where they basically come out and do worked BJJ. Worked BJJ can be really cool, and they did lots of fun transitions and submission attempts here without ever slowing down. There was a funny bit where Cherry did an eyepoke and pulled Katsumuras jacket over his head, but other than that this was just clean grappling and pretty fun. It’s always cool to see wrestlers showing a different skillset and Cherry looked pretty legit here. Really cool finish with the crazy gi choke.

Ken Ohka vs Naoshi Sano, Ganbare Pro 7/8/2017

BLOODBATH!! Surprisingly fun scummy heel performance from Sano here working over Ohka. He does a fine job acting like scum, and his open handed shots are pretty fun. Ohka is kind of a sleazeball too, and while he’s probably not very good, he brings a good deal of vibe with his scrappy flying tackles and the schlubby wifebeater and jeans he’s wearing. Both guys end up bleeding big and it’s fun, with Ohkas blood getting all over Sanos hands from Sanos strikes. Sano looked surprisingly competent demolishing Ohka here, and there was a fun sense of irony in how Sano would cut off Ohkas lazy comeback attempts. They are wise enough to not overstay their welcome. Just bleed big, let people soak in the spectacle, and go home.

Shuichiro Katsumura vs Tsuyoshi Okada, Ganbare Pro 8/11/2019

One of the better BattlARTS-style matches in the post-BattlARTS world that I can recall. Actually felt like an angry PANCRASE fight with both guys really hitting those palm strikes like they meant it. Great aggression and no real sense of holding back, which is awesome. The flash submissions ruled, too. Katsumura is a legit grappler so he can really do some spectacular stuff and Okada was up to the task. I loved the shootstyle version of the TKO, and his jumping knee looked like it nearly killed Katsumura. Nifty Fujiwara-esque finish. Really good for what it was, I actually wanted to see it go longer.

2025 Wrestling Roundup Week 29

Tsuyoshi Michibata vs Tatsunori Oya, Kobe Meriken 5/23

No clue who this Oya guy is, but he tries to rush Michibata at the bell. Michibata proceeds to kick the absolute shit out of Oya. And slaps the shit out of him too for good measure. After taking a bunch of savage kicks Oya makes a somewhat crummy comeback hitting a flimsy X-Factor. He continues to get on track a bit locking in some submissions but is soon stopped dead in his straight when he runs into a Michibata knee to the face. Oya clumsily tries going for the arm but is soon put to sleep. Amazing the things that can happen in a tiny sportsbar.

Tanomusaku Toba & Tyson Maeguchi vs Takuya Wada & Shuichiro Katsumura, Ganbare Pro 6/1 - FUN

Kickboxers vs shooters! Pretty good action here. Even with a bunch of younger and faster guys around, I think Toba was probably the best guy in the match. He'd aggressively try to elbow people in the head, and sell vulnerability which made things interesting, then blast punch people in the face. That said Maeguchi was also pretty fun. He had some cool fast combos and good energy. Couple neat exchanges involving him down the stretch and a great finish. Wada and Katsumura don't leave a huge impression but they are solid enough. Good stuff.

Akito vs Yuya Koroku, DDT 6/1

Yuya Koroku is another wrestler from DDTs never ending supply wrestlers who are somewhat-competent-but-not-terribly-interesting-to-me. This was mostly WoS style chain wrestling and pretty fun. Akito is pretty good doing this stuff, not a master but it was fun watching him block Korokus basic escape attempts. Dug all the slick pin attempts. Koroku goes along fine and the veteran vs upstart aspect adds a bit of flavor.

Ali Najima & Masanori Kanu Watanabe vs Shota Marlon Miwa & Yukito, HEAT UP 7/12

This was about 8 minutes long and pretty great. We get some fun shootstyle grappling between Watanabe and Yukito at the beginning with Yukito once again looking very capable. Once Najima gets in the ring the match immediately becomes really stiff. Najima is turning into the most exciting wrestler on earth with his hard kicks and crazy running headbutts. I am also digging his use of the firemans carry. Almost everything he hit in this match rattled people and it's really fun. Shota Marlon Miwa is this skinny guy in karate pants but he seemed capable and also hit a really great axe kick at one point. BattlARTS-style KO finish was really cool. A lot of great action in a very short time, this was a winner.

Utami Hayashishita vs Takumi Iroha, Marigold 7/16

A lot of really good work in this. Thought the build from Iroha being the (convincing) overdog to Utami taking her down a peg and levelling the field by doing some pretty fun legwork was really good. There were a few awesome touches and they did an excellent job building to the big bombs, like there was remarkably little move spam for such a long match. Thought they both did a pretty good job selling the work on the back and leg. That said, holy fuck 56 minutes is too long for these two at this point, just way too much bloat. The match already started out slow, and 20 minutes in they were already at a snails pace doing constant double downs and things like that to stretch out the match to the maximum. The finish wasn't exactly Kandori vs Hokuto either. Edit it down to like 30 or even 40 minutes and add a better ending and you'd have the match of the year.

2025 Wrestling Roundup

Tanomusaku Toba Documentation

In the beginning God created heaven and GAEA

Meiko Satomura vs Ran Yu Yu, GAEA 9/15/2003

Once again GAEAism delivers the goods. Ran Yu Yu is one of my favourites of all time, Satomura is obviously one of the greatest too, I had no idea this total dream match was filmed or that it even happened, and here GAEAism delivers it to us, for free. It’s not what we deserve but what we sorely need. This is not in Korakuen Hall, so the the match is not uber-heated or anything like that, but it’s exciting. Both these two are strong on the mat and can deliver some hellish strikes, so at baseline it will be a good match, and this had a few cool flourishes to elevate to the extra level. Really enjoyed the early build here, I wasn’t sure at their rankings at this point since Meiko has gone toe to toe with the biggest names in the company and Yu Yu is an outsider, but Yu Yu does a nice job working overdog and outclassing Meiko, until she takes a nasty spill which allows Meiko to capitalize and attack her weak spot. I enjoyed the little section where Meiko landed awkwardly on a backdrop and Yu Yu tried to capitalize locking in some cool spinning leglocks. There’s a pretty great palm strike exchange and some cool bits of dodging and outstriking. Rans selling was really good and her offense is so classy and cool, I loved her comeback with the nasty strangle into the perfect setup for her jumping enzuigir, and young Meiko while kinda overzealous and landing awkwardly on a few of her spots is a ton of fun as always. Really good match, says a lot how good this was considering they put it on for a quite crowd on a tour spot.

Chigusa Nagayo & Lioness Asuka & Dynamite Kansai vs Mayumi Ozaki & KAORU & POLICE, GAEA 9/15/2003

An excellent, heated, exciting, blood-drenched match that is largely built around Policeman getting his scrawny ass kicked. Stone Cold Chigusa once again rules hard in this punching Police in his ratty face. The match is great because they stay in the ring, and they create just the right amount of chaos but also a lot of fast paced, cool exchanges thanks to KAORU, Oz and Kansai. Of course Kansai/Nagayo/Asuka is one might trio of asskickers and they all kick ass a lot in this. There’s also blood, biting, lots of clunky weapon hits with chairs and tables etc without over indulging. A few cool ECW style chair spots as well. And well the bits where Policeman gets his is some of the best comeuppance you’ll see in a wrestling match, I can’t overexaggerate how good this was. I mean, Kaoru getting her head shoved into POLICEs crotch got one of the biggest pops of the match, and if that isn’t pro wrestling done right I don’t know what is.

Meiko Satomura & Chikayo Nagashima vs Devil Masami & Aja Kong, GAEA 9/23/2003

It’s JIP : ( Doing that to a 2003 GAEA Korakuen Hall main event feels almost criminal. What we get is really good, though. Masami was questionable at this point but she could still engage in some great big vs little exchanges, especially against the ultra talented likes of Nagashima and Satomura. And the Satomura vs Aja finishing run was just tremendous stuff again. 2003 GAEA really feels peak level with creativity, fast pace, high effort and heat that the matches have going on, without getting too cute, there’s a lot of cool shit but everything still feels scrappy. Nagashima had also gotten quite great at this point with her cool agility and destroying people with those crazy rolling double stomps she’d do. Sick stuff, although some annoying no-selling was there.

Meiko Satomura vs Toshie Uematsu, GAEA 10/5/2003

A lot of wildly good shit juxtaposed in a frantic and sometimes overdone way, GAEA style. For example, Uematsu hit a big dive right into a kick from Meiko, which is barely acknowledged seconds later. Some silliness ensues with Uematsu teasing blowing a spitwave at the audience, then they both take turns throwing a bucket back and forth. Uematsu, whose spiked hair may have been at peak level here, hits a great dropkick and throws some sick punches. There are a few great submissions and counters and Satomura throws some great combos of her own. Worth checking out for the cool shit they do, although the layout could’ve been improved.

Toshie Uematsu vs Devil Masami, GAEA 10/13/2003

Way too fun. I’ll admit: This is almost a comedy match, and will probably mainly appeal to people who are already fans of the too. That said, I thought this was a great big vs little match that had a ton of uniqueness going for it. Masami tends to overdo her ‘invisible monster’ act and Uematsu while insanely talented didn’t quite seem to have it all together at this point. Against each other, I think they reeled each other in just about perfectly. Masami does an almost Fujiwara-ish amount of carny jokes and not taking Uematsu seriously here, and it pays dividends for the story of the match. Lots of unique spots, Uematsus stuff looks great, Masami is great shutting her down and doing all those ‘I’m a comically unstoppable force’ spots, the hair throw into the guardrail being the perfect example. Builds pretty well thanks to Uematsus intense selling. It works really well and makes for a super entertaining match. Ridiculous finish. Pretty great overall if you ask me.

2025 Wrestling Roundup Week 28

Dick Togo vs Daisuke Sasaki, DDT 6/18

Impressive showing by Dick Togo. Man retired like 12 years ago and here he is again working the same pace. You really couldn't tell he's a 55 year old man here, he even busts out the old rolling senton to the floor. This is mostly delightfully old school work with a few impressive moments that catch you of guard. Felt wonderfully spontaneous throughout, with moments such as Togo punishing a weak stomp from Sasaki by instantly taking him down, or later cutting him off with a gritty lariat. Sasaki is solid enough angling to attack Togos leg from all angles, without ever falling into drawn out limbwork. Could've done with a bit more leg selling but it's not like that stuff ate up a big part of the match. Got a bit too drawn out at the end for my liking, though it delivers the big punch exchange, senton and crossface nearfalls that a Dick Togo fan will like. And the finish is just a big old punch to the face and you have to love that.

Strong Machine J  vs Madoka Kikuta, Dragon Gate 7/13

How strange that the son of the legendary Strong Machine is a Dragon Gate wrestler. If it wasn't for that I never would've watched this, and well this was a reminder why Dragon Gate isn't for me. Machine looked cool, he has energetic offense, his dropkicks are awesome and he looks really good when he starts punching and lariating a guy, and just the fact he wrestles a lot like his dad and is willing to get his mask ripped open makes him interesting. This Kikuta guy really sucks, I thought there might be potential when he clocked Machine J with a hammer but then he proceeded to just slowly rummage around for weapons and it was probably the slowest negative intensity wrestling I've seen all year. Really too much rummaging around and not enough hate. Machine throwing the table at the cameraman felt crazier than anything in the match. I think that kid really needs to show up in Tenryu Project.

Gauntlet: Hummingbird vs Komomo Minami vs Nagisa Tachibana vs Senka Akatsuki, Marigold 6/28

Didn't really care for all the non-Senka wrestlers in this, as far as I can tell everyone just did a bunch of flimsy offense with little intensity. The contrast when Senka steps in with her basic offense that actually looks good and means something is stark. Really enjoyed watching her take out these half baked wrestlers with shoot pins and body slams. Senka is getting the monster push, and rightfully so.

Ari Najima & Yuta Oya vs Masanori Kanu Watanabe & Ryutaro Ono, Sportiva 7/16

'Nother good match from Sportiva. Najima vs Watanabe continues to deliver, they did some more cool grappling and another cool grappling exchange. Ono continues to be fun in the hapless rookie role. What's cool about this is that we now get to see Oya and Najima beat on some lower ranked guys. That brief section of attacks on the back was pretty fun. Good stuff, not mindblowing but they are all continueing on the right path.

Poison Sawada & Kazuhiko Matsuzaki & Masaru Toi & Vasara Ikeuchi vs Guts Ishijima & Masked Mystery & Michio Kageyama & Yuki Kanzaki, Yoshino Aid 6/22

This was CRAZY UNION vs TTT and a pretty fun take on an indy brawl. Just a bunch of crazy looking guys with charisma beating on each other, and running in and out really fast so it doesn't get broing. Ikeuchi and Kanzaki wailing on each other was probably the highlight but there was also a crazy moment where Poison Sawada busted out a damn knife. It was kind of over in a flash, but it was a blast to see guys like Toi and Matsuzaki still around and brawling, Toi looked so energetic.

2025 Match Roundup

It's a MARVELOUS day

2/3 Falls: Takumi Iroha & Rin Kadokura vs Mio Momono & Leo Isaka, Marvelous 4/29/2017

Intrigueing match up on paper, that ended up probably being even better than I expected. Momono and Kadokura are still in their rookie stage, tagged with two evenly matched higher ranked wrestlers. So whenever it was either of them vs Iroha or Isaka, there was immediate peril, and when it was them against each other they were fiercely competitive. Isaka and Iroha do a good job here, Isaka looks really polished with his cool kicks and big dropkicks, and Iroha is not quite the badass she is now but she’s already really good as the higher ranked kicker thrust kicking peoples head off. Thought this built to a bunch of really really good exchanges and the ranking difference was handled nearly perfectly. Kadokura is a lot of fun here building up to a basic body slam, and Momono was already busting out some slicker offense including lots of cool armbars. Lots of great ‘higher ranked partner helps out lower ranked partner’ spots which are always a favourite of mine. Because it’s two out of three falls pretty much everything is a plausible finish, which increases the tension when Kadokura and Momono are in because even something like a bodyslam or crossbody is a finish then. This had a bunch of great forearm smash contests that really felt closer to something like Mantell v. Lawler, fighting down to the knees and back up, way better than your typical 2017 era elbow exchanges. All 3 falls were super hard fought and I thought they did an amazing job keeping the pace of the match without getting repetitive or getting into overkill. Really impressive achievement and something of a hidden gem if you ask me.

Takumi Iroha vs Mio Momono, Marvelous 11/3/2019

Momono has ascended past swimsuited rookie status and is on the rise, but she can still hardly put a dent into Iroha. Personally, I prefer the Shinya Hashimoto-type demeanour ala ‘I’m gonna wipe you off the face of the earth’ over Irohas ‘smiling and laughing because my opponent is that pathetically weak’ bit here, but Iroha certainly is convincing when it’s time to chop and kick the hell out of Momono. It builds to a few increasingly great comebacks from Momono, up to the last couple minutes which are really good with Momono throwing absolute haymakers trying to knock Iroha out and Iroha putting more violence than usual into her strikes. Sick ending that harkened back to the likes of Devil Masami flattening some GAEA rookie. Quality underdog story with some really slick wrestling and some sick as hell strikes, thought Momono looked great here.

Takumi Iroha vs Chigusa Nagayo, Marvelous 12/8/2019

Yes 55 year old Chigusa takes on the tank that is Iroha! Really intrigueing match that ends up being compelling. Chigusa comes out with a ridiculous amount of sponsor logos on her attire (gotta get the most out of this packed Korakuen Hall crowd) and looks like someones grandma. But god damn Chigusa is pro wrestling incarnate and she knows how to make anything compelling. Lots of great staredowns. They do pad some time by doing a lot of chops on the floor, but once they are back in the ring it’s great stuff. Chigusa still throws vicious strikes, her forearms still look better than most guys forearms, and she can still kick Iroha in the face. It looks like there’s a glimmer of hope (or should I say, ego?) that Nagayo could put Iroha in trouble, but Irohas youth advantage soon becomes apparent and she starts demolishing Nagayo and not holding back. Some great, Hashimoto like selling from Nagayo here, really getting the most out of this. It goes a bit too long, but the crucifixion-like ending makes it all worthwhile. Really unique match, the kind that only a handful of personalities in wrestling history could craft.

2025 Wrestling Roundup Week 27

Ari Najima vs Masanori Watanabe, Sportiva 7/9

The U-Style-in-a-sportsbar-resurrgence continues. Some great grappling exchanges here, with Najima looking really good, he may be one of the best guys on earth right now, which is pretty crazy considering his debut was like a year ago, but I guess when you wrestle twice a week for a year you get good fast. Both guys deciding to do shootstyle grappling on the floor was a crazy moment and they actually continued to do grappling. Liked how Najima, after just getting entangled in an armbar by Watanabe continued to sell an arm/shoulder injury throughout. Back in the ring we get some more scrappy exchanges and Watanabe kicking Najima in the bad shoulder and hitting cool arm takeovers. Headbutt exchange leading to the running headbutt was pretty sick too. Ending felt premature, but I guess these two will fight each other a lot more, at least I hope so because this definitely made me excited to see these two develop a full on rivalry. Great stuff, more passion, skill and energy on display here than in a lot of matches on much bigger shows, Sportiva is on a roll.

Asuka Fujitaki vs Yuria Hime, STARDOM 6/4

This was good pro wrestling. Basically Yuria tries to hit fast and hard to take down the bigger Fujitaki. When Fujitaki tried to give Hime the rookie treatment with a boston crab (that Hime desperately tried to avoid), Hime came back with some quite vicious big boots. I also dug how they built to the bodyslam. Fujitaki doesn't do the cool submissions she showcased in the YuuRi match, but she is effective her putting down her opponent with basic lariats. Good basic all action match, the one let down was a somewhat awkward transitoin into Yurias skullsmasher move thing.

Utami Hayashishita & Mayu Iwatani & Seri Yamaoka vs Takumi Iroha & Senka Akatsuki & Sora Ayame, Marigold 6/17

Interpromotional joshi action! They put all these rookies in the main event so they know what kinda gold they have on their hands right now. And this largely delivers. First Yamaoka vs Senka exchange is a lot of fun. Then the intensity picks up a lot when Iroha tags in and starts waffling Seri. Iroha did a great job carrying herself like a badass in this and delivering character moments. Hayashishita is cool but I thought she could've carried herself as bigger considering she's the world champion of this promotion. I mean, her getting shoved around by the rookies is fun, but  I thought her later exchanges with Senka would've been a bigger deal if she had established herself as more of a badass earlier. Iwatani is hit and miss but was able to engage in some hot exchanges largely thanks to Iroha. But the match delivers the Senka moments that you want. Her testing herself against Utami is fun, she had a killer sleeper hold at one point and the SHOOT PIN~ is still strong. Also the match needed more Seri. Still, a really fun match that delivers more complex action than you'd expect going in and made me invested in this little Marigold/Marvelous feud.

Averno, Dr. Cerebro, Euforia, Volador Jr. & Xelhua vs. Blue Panther, Hologram, Neon, Valiente & Virus (ACTION 5/24/2025)

20 minutes of non-stop goodness. Your GOATS Blue Panther and Virus looked insane, and everyone else was a ton of fun. Match had a little bit of everything: cool lucha matwork, but they move on to standing exchanges pretty fast, lots of dives, complicated highspots from Neon and Hologram, and thankfully also plenty of rudo antics. Loved the rudo stuff honestly as it was just right to stop the match from becoming a total exhibition. Also loved Euforias little monster run, and Valientes highflying was really impressive considering he must be pretty old by now. Blue Panther continues to be the greatest plucky old man in wrestling, and Virus still looked like the best guy in the match. A lot of cool highspots but Holograms no brakes suicide dive probably took the cake. Finish looked too easy, but sometimes you just gotta take it home and give the fans a feel good moment.

White Moriyama vs Ari Najima, HEAT-UP 6/1

It's White Moriyama for real this time! Once again, this had the weird rules with 1st round being kickboxing, 2nd grappling and 3rd is straight forward everything goes. Kickboxing was alright, with a few punches landing pretty hard, grappling round was pretty intense where it seemed neither wanted to give up the advantage. And finally in the 3rd it's a pretty awesome breakdown with Najima really laying into Moriyama with hard shots. Moriyama seemed to have slowed down and looked like dead meat, but then started giving Najima back as good as he got. Last strike exchange was downright savage and the finish was rad. Seems Moriyama has only stepped a few times in the ring this year which is regrettable because he can clearly still go.

2025 Wrestling Roundup

Assorted Ice Ribbon

Kiku vs Tsukasa Fujimoto, Ice Ribbon 4/12/2022

I liked Kiku in the one match I’ve seen of her, and I know Tsukasa is a pretty respectable wrestler, so I decided to check this out. This is at the beginning of Kikus career so she is still taking rookie punishment, i.e. 5 dropkicks from Kiku can’t knock Tsukasa down and so on. However just when she looks hopeless Kiku is able to hit a surprise body slam, allowing her to go for her signature submission, which Tsukusa resists against with all her might. Kiku In a smart move drags Tsukasa to the floor and locks in a figure 4, which Tsukasa sells as actually damaging. This sets up the surprisingly intense second half with both of them slapping the shit out of each other and hitting some hard kicks. Basic stuff but very well done.

Asahi vs Tae Honma, Ice Ribbon 6/11/2022

Pretty different type of match for Ice Ribbon. No comedy or time wasting, instead they grappled and stubbornly went for the armbar. Asahi in particular had lots of slick ways to tie up her opponent and try to bend her arm out of the shoulder, though Honma does also look good. Some really well timed flash submissions and roll ups here, which is kind of the best case scenario for an Ice Ribbon match. There was also a great struggle over a Tiger Suplex at one point. Won’t make you forget ARSION, but it’s a fine unique piece of pro wrestling.

Chon Shiryu vs Kiku, Ice Ribbon 5/6/2023

Another great little match from Chon Shiryu, what are the odds? The man just keeps on delivering every chance he gets. This is pretty rad 7 minute match. It’s almost all Shiryu, though Kiku is cool too. Kiku now has a frying pan that she hits people with for the obligatory once-per-match comedy spot (god I hate Japan sometimes), but Shiryu turns that frying pan against her, hitting Kiku spine-first with the frying pan against the apron in an actually painful looking spot. I really buy that a kung fu master would know how to use a frying pan to hurt someone in unique ways. Shiryu then does a real workmans job working over Kikus spine with nasty elbows and a cool springboard stomp. Shiryu just keeps doing cool shit. Kiku only has two brief comebacks, although they are fun. Finish is fucking great as Kiku get Shiryu down and desperately goes for her signature submission but Shiryu pulls her over, locking in a submission of his own for the tap.

Asuka Fujitaki vs YuuRI, Ice Ribbon 6/8/2024

Really fun 8 minute match that had a lot of good stuff packed into it. Fujitaki is a thickly built girl, who has both fun ways to crash into her opponent as well as some skill. Fujitaki displays some cool submissions, and YuuRI tries to beat her in ratty ways. YuuRI actually has some pretty fun well timed kicks of her own. Apparently Fujitaki has gone under several different names notably as Grizzly Fujitaki and now Asuka Goda, I should probably watch more of her because this was cracking.

Asahi vs Saori Anou, Ice Ribbon 12/31/2022

Really good stuff here, no doubt. Starts really nice with an intense lock up. They move through some actually impressive slick sequences with some cool bridging spots. Asahi eventually gets Anou in an armbar which Anou sells as a big deal and Asahi takes control working over Anous arm. Really nice control segment with well done attempted comebacks and cutoffs. The build from Asahi being firmly in control to the match slipping away from her was really good I thought, as such I didn’t even have a huge problem with her no selling because it gave the sense that she was desperate to maintain control. It was a bit iffy when they did the chest forearms but then Asahi did these cool double handed blows to Anous face and Anou retaliated with a thudding enzuigiri of her own. Last couple minutes actually felt gritty due to Asahi trying her damndest to snap Anous arm. There is some sloppiness and they do get carried away with an assload of nearfalls but that’s joshi sometimes, the build and substance here were a lot better than your typical joshi movesfest though. Thought Asahi looked quite good here, she put some real heft into her forearms and the arm attacks were cool, I wonder what she’s been up t- oh, apparently she died in an accident not long after this. Bummer to say the least.

Best of the Velocity Matches #7

Albert vs John Cena, 10/1/2002

First time in a while Albert faces another young heavyweight in the rookie John Cena. And Albert basically wrestles like a 2002 Walter here stiffing Cena around and smacking him. He had some pretty nice knee strikes and his Bicycle Kick looked absolutely unreal. Cena wasn't as good as he has looked in previous matches but he was fine enough. And he wins it with the Protobomb for the first time, too! Poor Albert just couldn't catch a break, jobbing to Funaki and now rookie Cena.

Billy Kidman vs Doug Basham, 10/1/2002

Doug Bashham is really amusing here looking like a total creep with his greasy hair and leather pants. It was his second match on TV too. Kidman is super nice here, taking a huge bump for Doug over the rope. Doug had some slick moves - a cool bow and arrow against the buckle, nice quick russian legsweep, a flying leg lariat from the rope that was really cool. It's almost weird how much offense Kidman gives Doug in this match. You don't know what Doug Basham of all people is gonna do in a 5 minute 2002 TV match and that makes this fun. Kidman wins it with the Shooting Star and Doug is sent back to developmental.

Tajiri vs Shannon Moore, 10/1/2002

Eh, Moore isn't that good. He is athletic enough and that's fine with me, but his character doesn't go far beyond 'he trained with the Hardys'. Tajiri is the Velocity god though and he does some really nice legwork on Moore here and kicking him in the face for good measure. To be fair Moores leg selling was quite good and it produces some interesting results because of his athletic style. The spin kick to the back of Tajiris head was surprisingly brutal, too.

 Chavo Guerrero vs Crash, 10/8/2002

A match up that will make any 2002 Velocity superfan excited. Both these move really well and precise, and they just do that little extra to make a 4 minute throwaway match memorable. In this case Chavo does a really nice job working attacking Crashs neck. Crash makes a really nice comeback to constantly selling his neck. Like, he would make Chavo bump, but had to clutch his neck, so he couldn't follow through for the usual 'guy takes 2 clotheslines in rapid succession' spot. Pretty nice. He even takes the time to give Chavo some payback by elbowing his neck and bouncing his head against the turnbuckle. Chavo takes it with a nasty Brainbuster. Good stuff.

Albert vs Funaki, 10/8/2002

Albert is trying hard to escape 'Velocity jail' as he called it. I think he was actually thriving there. I'm really enjoying this match series between him and Funaki. Albert really beats the crap out of the smaller guy in this match and Funaki is great trying to evade him and bombard the bigger man with fast dropkicks and other credible offense. At one point Funaki hit this really hard Dick Togo esque back senton for a nearfall that was just totally awesome. And the 'working the back hair' rules once again. Crowd really got into it, too. Really nice little match series between these two.

2025 Wrestling Roundup Week 26

Shinya Ishida & Yu Shimizu vs Ari Najima & Masanori Watanabe 7/2

Really good match from Sportiva this week. Solid no frills pro wrestling early on and a bunch of really good stuff in the second half. Once again, I was really impressed by Yu Shimizu. His brutal elbows rule and he's always doing something nifty. His boot that knocked Watanabe off the apron was straight out of 90s AJPW. Ishida stuck to his stuff, but he looked slick and did a bunch of awesome quick exchanges with Najima in the second half. Najima has also grown to the point where he now keeps up with more complicated stuff pretty well. Watanabe is still green-ish but he's really good when he's grappling or attacking someones arm. The finish was Shimizu mauling him with elbows and Watanabe trying to break Shimizus elbow with nasty kicks and elbows. Very good stuff, I can't wait to see another singles match between these guys.

Senka Akatsuki vs DASH Chisako, Tenryu Project 5/21

Great little match that brought some sick violence worthy of WAR. DASH just beat the hell out of young Senka here, some crazy violent slaps and dropkicks and stomps on display. Senka takes a big beating, but you know it all can change when she gets her opponents shoulders down and starts working for the pin. The shoot pin still rules. I liked when DASH did the 'okay, hit me' Senka was immediately right there and started to maul her with open hands, Senka is pretty big. Some great cutoffs from DASH here. I'm digging this 2025 joshi resurgence, you know the passion is back when a throwaway match on a mens show is this heated, and it all started with Senka.

Ari Najima vs Yukito, HEAT-UP 5/3

This had the rule  that it was a rounds match with the 1st round being kickboxing with gloves, 2nd round being grappling only and the 3rd just regular pro wrestling. Kickboxing part was alright, they were holding back a little. Grappling part was really good, Najima is clearly really good at this kind of slick shootstyle grappling and it was nice that he get to test himself like this. 3rd round was also really fun with both guys kicking and slapping each other in fun ways and developing good intensity, check out Aris arm selling. Good stuff but I'd like to see just a proper shootstyle match between them because at just 3 minute rounds this felt a little short.

Taking a look at... Hot Shushu

Chon Shiryu vs Samas (Hot Shushu 5/6/2024)

I’m a big fan of Chon Shiryu, and I’m naturally inclined to check out any match he’s in. Samas is a pretty interesting guy, he’s a tall-ish foreigner with a cool mask and odd agility which allows him to hit some cool looking high kicks. Samas was a bit dainty with his movements at times but he sure looked convincing when has dropping bombs, I can definitely see potential in him, plus I am sucker for guys who look straight out of a 90s Mortal Kombat game. This was a lot like how I would fantasy book a hypothetical Chon Shiryu run in a US TV promotion, really nice fast paced big vs little match with Shiryu hitting his awesome spots including the diving kick to the floor. Samas was really cool to watch in this, lots of cool hurty looking offense without being cliché big man stuff. Cool little match in that dojo,

Kiku vs Banako (Hot Shushu 5/6/2024)

So I was looking through the Hot Shushu highlight videos trying to figure out what match ups look interesting, and I thought this girl Kiku looks cool. Then I look her up on Cagematch and SHE’S 47 YEARS OLD??? And her debut was just in 2021? I have a fascination with wrestlers who start wrestling late, they always seem to have a better mind for wrestling and with guys like Yasushi Sato, Yuta Oya or Hiroki Sakai the genre has produced some greats, so to see someone like that show up in the cosmos of Ice Ribbon is fascinating. And yeah, watching this Kiku is definitely really cool. She has actually hard kicks, and cool submissions. Banako is another one of those wrestlers whose personality is pretty much ‘joyful clown in a world of asskickers’. Banako didn’t strike me as insanely talented – not really having more than a basic dropkick and roll ups – but the contrast with her and Kiku being a more serious asskicker and putting the boots to her with said hard kicks and cool submissions is really fun. Kiku sets herself up for Banako in ways that really help the match too. I’m definitely gonna have to watch more Kiku.

Takahiro Tababa & Tatsuhito Takaiwa vs Samas & Yoshikazu Yokoyama (Hot Shushu 7/20/2024)

Tababa and Takaiwa, what a team. Unfortunately Yokoyama may be one of the worst wrestlers I’ve ever seen, he’s just super low effort to the point where he shows up wrestling in a t-shirt, so this was a little rough. Samas also wasn’t in the match a ton. Takaiwa still looks insanely tough but can barely move. Tababa kicking Samas really hard was pretty fun, and Yokoyama did get it together to at least hit some nice Death Valley Bombs for the finish.

Chon Shiryu vs Kouyo (Hot Shushu 4/7/2024)

Another Chon Shiryu showcase match baby. This was also really cool. Shiryu could just coast and hit his spots, but he strayed from his usual stuff to work an indy main event formula match with his opponent. That means a bit slower pace but we get to see what Shiryu can do, working some cool matwork, attacking Kouyos legs with some nifty holds. He did have some cool parkour spots where he used the walls of this tiny dojo to his advantage in awesome ways. Kouyo is a bit green and bland, but he’s solid enough, he does hit some nice kicks, his 619 setup was cool, although his thigh slappy kick combo was pretty weak, he did sell the leg work though. Pretty insane finish. I love watching Shiryu do his thing.

Daisuke Sekimoto vs Samas, Hot Shushu 2023/7/17

Apparently, this was Samas 3rd match ever, unless he was working some place elsewhere before that Cagematch doesn't know about.  And this is wisely kept very basic. Sekimoto could probably wrestle in his sleep. With him, you always get your test of strengths, your shoulderblocks, your forearm exchange... he has a simple formula that works, and it tends to bore me to death so I can only watch him once every couple years. Samas being the opponent makes things more interesting than usual, since he's actually quite a bit bigger than Sekimoto despite how freakishly large this short Japanese mans chest and shoulders have gotten. Because Samas is bigger and hefty Sekimoto is actually forced to come up with a few different touches and when he hits the deadlift german it's actually impressive. Samas didn't show a ton here, none of the cool stuff he did in the Shiryu match really, but sometimes a 3rd match is just a 3rd match.

5 minute exhibition: Yoshiko Tamura vs Tanny Mouse, Hot Shushu 12/24/2023

It's Christmas and Tamura is dressed as Santa and Tanny is dressed as a reindeer. And well... they work this pretty much exactly as if it were a serious 2005 NEO match or so. Just both of them going really hard, nailing their signatures, not wasting much time with comedy (though Tanny does get her due here and there) All their stuff still looks good and you get the sense either of them could return to in-ring competition and be near top level still. Tanny looked especially slick still, like she had never stopped. And they do it all while dressed in those ridiculous costumes. Too surreal not to talk about this. It was getting awe inspiring when Tanny went for the muscle buster but then the time ran out. What a Christmas dream!

XGF Backyard Brawl 7 5/10/2025

Dekai Ichimotsu vs The Insect #2

I've noticed that my reviews have been getting a bit awfully normal lately, so let's change that with some XGF. This takes place in an amazingly creepy looking industrial hall with all kinds of trash laying around in the outskirts of god knows where, Japan. Insect #2 is a masked creep doing constant weird breathing noises and scuttling about. Naturally, Dekai chucks him to the mat and works some nelson hold variations to prove his wrestling superiority over the bug. Some surprisingly reckless strikes are thrown and Insect briefly gets the advantage when he suddenly connects with a foreign object, but doesn't seem to know what to do as he is a brainless bug after all. He does find his luck eventually biting Ichimotsus neck which is disgusting enough. We then get some attempted strangulation and Insect #2 going for the dreaded CROTCH BITE~! I wish Dean were alive to see this. The attempted hanging was gritty as fuck and Ichimotsu seemed to start bleeding from his mouth. When Ichimotsu falls to the floor, he comes up all dirty and dusty, adding to the grittiness. The Insect does fine mostly for someone who is probably not a good wrestler at all, as evidenced by his lousy punches whereas everything Dekai does looks great. Dekai does punch the insect in the face, hit a sick headbutt and then a piledriver on a pickup truck which is a finish to match. Very gritty and surreal, felt like a deranged version of a Survival Tobita fight, a great little match to set the tone for this Backyard Brawl.

Great Zako vs MAD APE

MAD APE!! Perhaps a relative of Virgon? His low grunt is convincing, but otherwise he feels very much just like a dude in a mask, making this feel a bit less like a surreal monsterfight than the previous match. Other than that there is some good gritty brawling going on with both guys trashing things on each others heads. When they venture outside, there is this really nice shot following them before the lush green bushes and trees. Zako ends up going face first into a pile of rubble and ends up lying bleeding on the ground which makes this feel like a snuff film. Both of them go for rusty, dirty pieces of metal that are lying around, poking them in each others face, its concentrated tetanus horror when Zako starts bleeding. At some point they venture downstairs, continueing to beat on each other while the camera unsuccesfully tries to get a look. Eventually Ape is able to hit a chokeslam into a pile of sand or cement and bury Zako with a shovel for the win. It's Backyard Brawl, what do you expect?

Paul Ishida vs taku

Now we are talking. Paul Ishida has a creepy ponytail, lots of jewelry, tabi poots, is built like a troll. He seems like he crawled out of the deepest darkest hole. taku, who belongs to the mysterious group called Ignite, wears regular pants and a wifebeater, but also has MMA gloves and likes to punch and kick. He is a bit hesitant at first, and Paul Ishida punishes that hesitancy quickly with some hard punches and bulldogging taku into a car tire because that's how thigs go in this XGF. taku does wake up when Ishida starts stapling stuff to his arm, and it's on. There are reckless punches and kicks, some great fistfighting, gritty submission fighting on the dirty floor next to oil puddles, guys get thrown into a car and half decayed debries etc. Ishida summons some Mr. Pogo weapons and both guys bleed big. At one point Ishida kicks out of a move on the floor and a pile of dirty weed gets stuck to his hair as he gets up. Really awesome gritty mix of face punches, blood, ghoulish vibe and some big bumps.

Minoru Kido vs Ryunosuke Takeda

This was pretty gory too. I gather Minoru Kido is some kind of cult hero among people, and this is my first time seeing him. Based on his demeanor and freakish look I can see the appeal. This was a bit milque toast deathmatch stuff, which is a bit weird for an XGF match. It had the standard opening chain wrestling, chair duel, and then guys taking turns doing repulsive things to each other. There was a bit of a malaise here, an absence of the passion, recklessness and absurdity that the previous matches had. That can be pretty sick too, and all those deathmatch spots feel a lot sicker when they are happening on a grimy sheet laid over a mat in the middle of some warehouse. Still there is plenty of violence and gore to be enjoyed here, and the folks in attendance for this event noticably moved back a bit to be safe from what these two lunatics were doing.

2025 Wrestling Roundup Week 33

Masato Tanaka vs Hayabusa, Zero1 8/3 I did not think I would be watching a Masato Tanaka vs Hayabusa match in 2025 but here we are. And this...
