2026 Matchguide #3

Ryohei Oiwa vs. Yuya Uemura, NJPW 8/16

This is the first New Japan main event I've checked out in a long time. My first impression is that they both look like Tanahashi clones. Okay, that's the most cynicism you'll get from me. The first 20 minutes of this are worked like a classic 70s or 80s match and it's fantastic stuff. They absolutely knew what they were doing. Getting into headlocks, trying to escape from headlocks, preventing escapes from headlocks, avoiding getting-counter headlocked and so on. Textbook stuff and they absolutely knew what they were doing. They mixed in a few more modern movements like a cartwheel or banderas, but for what it's worth, it was genuine classic pro wrestling in the vein of Flair/Steamboat, Dory Jr/Briscoe or Animal Hamaguchi/Mighty Inoue. So they basically did the thing that nerds like me were wishing for, and it rocked. It was genuinely some of the most compelling opening work to an NJPW big match I've seen in god knows how long. It felt like it mattered, because they were really hanging on to those headlocks and armlocks. Both guys acknowledged the squeeze too. I particularily enjoyed Oiwa selling his aching jaw after being tortured in the headlock for 5 minutes or so. The armdrag work and switches were spectacular. Just when I thought this was on it's way to becoming the greatest singles match NJPW has had since the Hashimoto era, the middle portion happened. There was a flimsy looking DDT, and both guys started no-selling. They continued to work tightly with a few neat spots and moments of genuine struggle, but it threw me off a little. You just worked hard to make people believe in a side headlock in 2026, and now you're getting up right away after a german suplex? That stuff doesn't compute with me. That said, they got back on track and settled for a finishing run in which they basically tried to tap each other out with the most basic holds and it was really compelling. I liked how they hit the shoot headbutts like battering rams, Fujiwara style. The overhead armdrag was also an amazing spot. All is well that ends well so I thought it was a lovely match and a great piece of work from both guys. They solved the modern big match problem where nothing really matters until one guy hits his finisher, and that's a big achievement. I'd thought this kind of wrestling would remain in the underground in promotions like Mutoha with matches like GENTARO/Arai or even Koichi Wakikaido doing experimental headlock-only matches in his dojo. Seeing it on a big stage like this and totally having the crowd by the balls the whole way was amazing in itself. Alas, even my complaints about the middle section are just a minor nitpick. The match had the excellent build and struggle of a classic match and the balls to try something completely different. The praise is deserved and New Japan might actually be on a good track now with these two at the front.

Ai Houzan vs Mio Momono, Marvelous 2/5

More of a psychological test than a wrestling match. Houzan has been kind o a perennial loser, so in this one Momono dares her to fight and they just stand in front of each other and hit each other as hard as humanly possible for a few minutes. Would've been pretty awesome stuff if they had integrated it into a bit more of a match but it was still pretty harrowing pro wrestling.

Hiroto Okubo & Tetsuya Goto vs Ayato Horiuchi & Hiroaki Taniguchi, Shi-En 3/21

Neat indy match where they went out of their way to make every section interesting. Horiuchi is a promising looking thickly built rookie who sticks to the basics and has some cool judo-style moves. Goto and Okubo sure to make him eat some hard dropkicks and stomps to the neck. Taniguchi is a fun powerhouse cleaning house and press slamming a guy to the floor, and I was surprised that when Horiuchi tagged back in he actually kept selling that neck. It made the finishing stretch a lot more dramatic as they put some good struggle even into basic stuff like a German suplex.

Masanori Kanu Watanabe vs. Super Taira, Sportiva 5/6

I always thoroughly enjoy Super Taira whenever he shows up, and this was no exception in his streak of interesting little matches. There was some quite good shootstyle matwork to begin here. Watanabe dominated the action, locking in a beautiful Mariko Yoshida-esque armbar, until Super Taira was able to catch him in an awesome llave in a Volk Han-like moment. During standing Watanabe tried to cave Taira chest in with some insanely hard kicks. Dig Tairas focus on trying to catch Watanabe with a flash pin, and he does throw the greatest european uppercut in the world. I guess the last couple minutes could've been a bit more interesting as basically Taira survived a bunch of offense before catching Watanabe slipping on a banana peel.

Rio vs. Sakura Mizushima, AWG 6/13

Nice little match, the kind that made AWG so fun last year. Mizushima avoiding Rios shoulderblock early on and cutting her down with some stomps to the shoulder before stretching her was some basic but very fun pro wrestling. Subsequent action was also quite good due to the building up of basic things like a body slam as important and showing some struggle. I like Rio, despite being bigger and packing more of a punch still came across as the underdog against the more experienced Mizushima who had a few believable ways to stay in control. The build to Rios Fireman Carry Slam was also excellent. Also really liked Mizushima coming back by catching Rio with a drop toe hold and then just stomping away at her. I always like a good stomping.

Karl Malenko vs. Tim Bosby, PRODUCE 8/3/2026

Probably my favourite Karl match since his return. Bosby reminded me a bit of an Alexander Otsuka type here, a burly amateur wrestler in a singlet who will suplex and banana split the fuck out of you. He actually looked like a worthy opponent for Karl, putting some pressure on him. Karl again showed little sign of his age and came up with some great counters and transitions. I loved how Bosby initially seemed to dominate on the ground with his powerful takedown only for Karl to tie him up in seconds. Bosby hurling the older guy around without holding back was great. Deadlift backbreaker was an awesome spot. I kind of expected something bigger after the Bosby strap drop ( he needs to learn to time those a bit better) but they wrapped it up with a nice finish.

2025 Matchguide: Addendum

Elimination Gauntlet: Ai Houzan, Maria, Riko Kawahata, Sora Ayame & Takumi Iroha vs. Chika Goto, Kizuna Tanaka, Miku Aono, Natsumi Showzuki & Rea Seto, Marigold 4/25

First half of this was pretty great and absolutely some of the best wrestling I've seen all year. There was interpromotional heat and a real sense of competitiveness. Pretty much perfectly laid out, establishing that a shoot submission or shoot pin could always eliminate someone. Loved all the frantic armbars etc and there was a real sense of fighting for survival, which is how it should be. Should say Maria looked quite great - really sharp offense, and her selling of the bad arm and desperately trying to even the score was right on the money. 2nd half was not quite as good I thought, but still plenty fun thanks to Miku Aonos harsh kicks, although going for the time limit finish 2 times in a row was a bit lame I thought. Chika Goto seemed way out of her depth against Iroha, though it was pretty fun to watch Iroha kick her like a mule and just coming out as a dominant badass. Overall I would still classify this as one of the more worthwhile matches of the year simply due to delivering quality action in spades and not being cookie cutter.

Elimination Gauntlet: Ai Houzan, Maria, Mio Momono, Riko Kawahata & Sora Ayame vs. Komomo Minami, Miku Aono, Seri Yamaoka, Utami Hayashishita & Victoria Yuzuki, Marvelous 8/8

Not quite as good as the 4/25 gauntlet match, but still pretty fun due to similiar factors: a sense of fighting for survival, any move can finish, and unconventional layout. There was some awkwardness and mishaps but nothing too egregious. Yamaoka vs Ayame at the beginning wasn't perfect but had the right spirit + Seris cool amateur wrestling moves. Match significantly improved again once Maria came in thanks to her sharp offense, cool submissions and Yasha Kurenai like scuzzy heel vibe. I also quite enjoy Ai Houzans quest to stop being such a loser. Aono and Kawahata were just solid here and I thought the match lost quite a bit of steam when they were at it, but thankfully things pick up again with Momono speed pinning Yuzuki and then a fun tricked out finishing run between her and Hayashishita. Definitely needed more of those frantic armbars that the 4/25 match had, though.

Timothy Thatcher vs Charlie Dempsey, WWE EVOLVE 11/14

Ahh.. EVOLVE is back? But now they're under the WWE banner outright? And it's like another WWE developmental? I have no idea what's going on, but one thing is for certain. Thatcher and Dempsey are gonna step in the ring and give you the grapplingest match you can possibly have on a WWE show. This was just a bunch of really tight hold for hold stuff with a good deal of aggression and accordingly, quite good. Won't make you forget Regal/Benoit but it's a fun shot at that kind of match. Thatcher does act a bit more punishing, busting out those cool knees on the ground and outright smacking Dempsey at the face. Some good nitty gritty groundfighting here and quality selling from Thatcher when Dempsey started beating up his leg. Really liked how they segued into the finish and Dempseys suplexes are awesome.

2025 Wrestling Week 9

Ari Najima vs Yuta Oya, Sportiva 2/24

Another very good little performance from the Sportiva super rookies. I love the absence of bullshit and rope running in Oyas matches. This was really straight forward, two guys hitting the mat, with Najima eventually working over Oyas arm with nasty cranks and kicks. Another great harai goshi spot from Oya here, and I loved the intense fighting for the sharpshooter with Najima selling his back. Really simple but enjoyable match.

Leon vs Hanako Nakamori, PURE-J 2/16/2025

These two had some of my favourite matches of the last decade. This was a 2 count pinfall match with the extra rule that there was a plastic circle in the middle of the ring and if you touch it you lose. That is a lot of bullshit ruleset. These two have a ton of fun ways to work around "the middle is lava" and clearly still have awesome chemistry. Lots of fun to be had here and some wild body control and ring positioning stuff (I imagine working a match where you can't touch the middle of the ring is pretty hard with most wrestlers being trained to work towards the middle). Still I want to see these two get up and face each other in a straight match again.

Ai Houzan vs Senka Akatsuki, Marvelous 1/4

Really enjoyed their shoot pinfall match, so I decided to check this out. Starts a little mundane but soon turns into hard as fuck match with Houzan beathing the hell out of the rookie. Lots of evil slaps and stomps from her. Sick moment where Akatsuki really cracks Houzan with a headbutt and Chigusa on commentary cracks up. Last couple minutes were pretty intense with Akatsuki trying to hit a bodyslam for the finish. For a wrestler whose signature moves are 'body slam' and 'intensely worked pinfall' she's really cool.

Ryo Mizunami & Sonoko Kato vs Mio Momono & Yurika Oka, OZ Academy 2/9

A lot of this was very good, but a lot of this was also not my cup of tea. One of the most annoying things about modern wrestling is the insistence of getting all your contrived sequences in, especially when you are a  babyface tag team. Lots of hitting 3 or 4 moves after another really fast that just comes across like Momono & Oka were just running through their offense with none of it meaning much. I kind of hate the Motor City Machineguns for infecting wrestling with this shit. That said a lot of what Oka & Momono did was really solid and some of the sequences were genuinely impressive, so maybe I am just a miserable negative bastard. I was impressed with Kato and Mizunami. No offense to Momono and Oka, but once Kato stepped into the ring the match got about ten times more real. Her kicks are still vicious and she never looked out of place in this fast paced go-go match, which goes pretty hard considering she's 48. I also dig Mizunami when she's not goofing around. Her leg drops and Honda-ish shoulder chokes are great. Also, watching Momono doing the second half of the match with her injured arm in a bandage was pretty insane. I'd say this was very good for a modern style match.

2025 Wrestling Week 8

Senka Akatsuki vs Ai Houzan, Marvelous 1/12

This was really unique and cool. Basically picture a basic joshi match, but make it insanely uncooperative. This was full of struggle and had some of the most intense pinfall attempts I've ever seen. Apparently this had the 'shoot pin' rule which means the wrestlers would (mostly) cooperate on standing stuff but once somebody was with their back to the mat the match would turn into a shoot while a pin was attempted. Leave it to Chigusa Nagayo to run that kind of insanity in 2025. Watching the rookie, Akatsuki put the more seasoned Ai Houzan in trouble for real was quite something to watch. Not a great match but really interesting and unique to see, maybe we should just turn pro wrestling into a shoot again.

Jaguar Yokota & Honori Hana vs Yumiko Hotta & Misa Kagura, SAREEE-ism 1/23

This is one of those matches that you have to love pro wrestling for. Yokota is 63, Hotta 58. They both can't move very well anymore, but they are still insanely charismatic, tough and know exactly what to do, so that made them really fascinating to watch here. Of course Yokota has to take most of the bumps in this match, she also busts out a dive to the outside and her insanely cool flipping axe kick. Wish their little exchange had gone longer because it was fascinating to watch. For some reason this match had some insane headbutts, Hana hits one on Hotta that left a dent in Hottas skull, and later Yokota tries to crack Kaguras head. The two young wrestlers didn't leave a huge impression, for some reason they just did a ton of shoulder blocks, but they kept it moving while you waited for Hotta or Yokota to tag in again. Fascinating match.

Takahiro Tababa vs GAJO, Big Bear Produce 2/22

Awesome brutal massacre, just two big monsters charging foreward and trying to tear each other apart. This felt like a fight to the death, 5 minutes in both guys are bleeding from elbows and headbutts. GAJO getting taken down, bloodied, rolling out, going back in trying to break Tababas jaw with a shooting headbutt was one of those 'pro wrestling exemplified' moments. Couldn't be happier that GAJO has come back to wrestling. I can't write many words here other than they brutalized each other and it felt like a fight to the death. Just the right mix of shootstyle and barfight. Felt like one of the greatest under 10 minutes ever on first watch.

Hechicero vs Valiente, CMLL 1/24

Really enjoyed this when it was just two masters putting holds on each other. Those first 90 seconds were some fine fine pro wrestling. Admittedly I thought they ended up doing a little too much, especially with the constant chopping, but it's also undeniable that they kept the cool stuff coming. I also liked how they made this match feel a lot bigger and more personal by going for their masks. I'm not sure why an under 10 minute match needs to have an apron bump but the apron bump here was pretty great, so was Valientes big dive. I also loved Hechiceros stomp in the ropes, he is really good at those little things. I thought this could have been better if they had kept it a bit more focussed and done slightly less, but you can't fault them for flexing their skills. Strong little match.
