A few matches from the Mutoha back catalogue

As always you can get them directly from the source through itako18jp

Keita Yano vs. Ryoji Nagaya, Mutoha 2/26/2010 - EPIC

This was shortly before Yano transformed into the joker. Hell it may have been his first match in the Cerberus Dojo too, and you can really see him breathing the vibe in as he steps on the mat. He’s wearing this bright grappling suit that he didn’t wear often. He was like a Louis Wain painting, becoming more colourful and strange with his transformations over the years. This match was just classic Keita stuff, really clinical performance taking a guy apart. Opening minutes were quite great as Yano would basically lock in armlocks at will and yank Nagaya around like a demonstration of carny grappling. Really awesome Fuchi/Volk Hanisch performance from Yano displaying his skill and trying to bend Nagayas limbs in hellishly painful looking ways. Nagaya was this pudgy guy who briefly was Mutohas only trainee before he moved on to sleazier things. He was pretty much in for the fight of his life here, as Yano was all over him on the mat. He knew he had to bring the intensity and that he did. At one point they go into this scramble leading into a front headlock battle where they end up tumbling out the door of the venue. They get back into it as they step back on the mat. Nagaya finally gets an advantage when he gets Yano in an indian deathlock and he really tries his hardest to make the most out of that. Both guys end up trying to bend each other to the point of snapping and its awesome. As I said before Yano was just great here, always trying to grab Nagayas head and twist it off, or unscrew his wrist or ankle. Feels really like classic Fujiwara or El Dandy/Javier Llanes stuff as they would even work a basic lockup or wristlock with tremendous intensity. Nagaya is so outmatched on the mat that when he starts hitting Yano it really looks like he’s trying to maul him with his stomps and forearms. He had an awesome crowbarish spin kick and a big flip senton that was Mighty Inoue levels of crushing and completely unexpected. He hits his stuff with such conviction it looks like the realest shit ever. And Yano just kept trying to snap limbs. I also loved him retaliating with probably he hardest kick to someones kidney that I've ever seen. So yeah 20+ minutes of high intensity great matwork and some gritty Kurisu violence, this was a Cerebrus Dojo special and it was awesome.

Kikujiro Umezawa vs. Chojin Yusha G Valion, Mutoha 6/20/2010

Early Mutoha cards are just full of all kinds of obscure indy guys. How often do you see the likes of Chojin Yusha G Valion and Kikujiro Umezawa? So it’s really nice that we just get to see guys like that. This is a kind of awesome match. It’s not very stereotypically Mutoha – there Is not really any mat work or technical wrestling here. But it still feels very much in the vein of Mutoha. They simply did a very simple, straight forward big vs. small type match with total conviction that made it really compelling. Umezawa is a human bowling ball of a man, he has the vibe of an ex-sumo from the days of WAR or IWE. He exudes this sense of glee when he gets to beat on Valion with his open hand chops and headbutts. Neither guy has any offense that you haven’t seen before – Valion just as a really nice dropkick, and Umezawa totally owns every basic thing he does, every slam every shoulderblock just crushing the masked guy. Valion does have a pretty unique way to dropkick Umezawa at the top of his head, but that’s it pretty much. Umezawa hits a spear at one point that’s about the damndest spear you’ve ever seen, totally turning Valion inside out and leaving him a scrambled mess. But it’s such a perfectly well worked and executed match that it ends up being interesting all the way through with not a wasted moment. I think Valion doesn’t even dive off the top rope in this. The finish is just Valion hanging onto a sleeper for dear life and trying to get the tap. It totally fits with the theme of the match and what Mutoha was going for. Nothing flashy just raw pro wrestling executed extremely well.

Chon Shiryu vs. MASAKI, Mutoha 12/29/2013

A totally awesome little match. MASAKI is a sleazy karateka with tattoos who wrestles like a mini Akitoshi Saito, all really hard kicks and neck chops. Chon Shiryu is of course always awesome and they are fighting in Cerberus Dojo to boot. Shiryu is always doing something interesting, even when he’s working basic hold he manages to come across like a kung fu master punishing his opponent, and he makes sure to always add something even to things like resisting a boston crab. MASAKI has a bunch of awesome kick variations and he really lays hard into Shiryus skinny frame. He hit this one kind of floating spin kick that was straight out of Tekken. And we get a bit of kung fu vs karate strikes which is of course cool. The finish is awesome too as Shiryu trips MASAKI then just leaps to the ceiling and hits this sick ass stomp to the back of MASAKIs neck before finishing him off pretty fast. He hit it so out of nowhere it looked totally killer. I love watching Shiryu do his thing, and against an unseen cool wrestler like MASAKI it’s really a pretty sweet discovery.

Lumberjack Match: Iori Sugawara vs. Ho Death Minh, Mutoha 5/14/2022

A total sleazefest. This is a lumberjack match so you have all these crazy characters lurking around the ring. There’s Leatherface, Katsunari Toi, Diablo, freaking Ricky Fuji even… a big part of the fun of this match is just watching all these guys brawling. Most of the fans have their cameras out and this definitely seems like a photographers dream match. But there’s also a surprisingly great wrestling match in here. Sugawara is another sleazy karateka who is really sharp with his kicks. Death Minh is Poison Sawada doing a crazy facepainted evil Vietcong gimmick, for those who don’t know. They cut a great pace and never really slow down, keeping the intensity up working some tight submissions and toe to toe fighting in the ring and always trying to throw the opponent to the outside for the lumberjacks to cause chaos. There’s also some measured and painful looking use of foreign objects. Vasaru Ikeuchi ends up interfering a bit too liberally and it causes an even bigger brawl with everyone jumping each other. By the end it’s almost like a Memphis match with Sugawara unloading a punch combo in the corner on Sawada and destroying him with his kicks, with Sawada trying to work the leg headbutting away at the knee. It’s delightfully old school and really sound. Sawada took a ton of punishment (considering how old and frail he looks) and Sugawara looked badass. Really unique and just amazingly fun.

Takahiro Tababa vs Yuki Takasugi, Mutoha 2017/11/4

This was another unusual match for Mutoha because Tababa just goes after Takasugi with a vengeance and beats the hell out of him with shoot kicks and chairs. Tababas kicks are sick looking and Takasugi is pretty fun here hitting 70s style flip sentons with full bodyweight on Tababa to retaliate. Fun and violent, but pretty short. The finish is really cool though as Takasugi goes for an old school backbreaker hold but Tababa slips to the back and yanks him back for a choke that he locked in so deep Takasugis face turned blue. Cool.

2026 Matchguide #2

Yuki Ishikawa & Fuminori Abe & Shuji Ishikawa vs. Daisuke Ikeda & Ali Najima & Kazunari Murakami, Kakuto Tanteidan 7/1

Impossible not to love this match. Chaotic and frenzied with everyone potatoeing each other a ton, which is probably the best possible approach they could have taken. While there wasn't much refined shootstyle going on I really liked that Abe armlock early on that nearly dislocated Najimas shoulder. Najima was pretty much a whipping boy here, eating punishment from all 3 opponents early on. Shuji Ishikawas a pretty effective crowbar as almost everything he does looks downright murderous.  It's also pretty cool that we got a little Yuki Ishikawa/Najima section. Ishikawa crowned him with a pretty sick headbutt too. I was also pleased that there was no stupid Abe comedy, instead he and Najima developed a really amusing hatred for each other throughout this with Najima going at him aggressively constantly. Really hope they can face each other at Sportiva sometime soon or something. Floor brawling section wasn't amazing but we got to see chairs being used and Abe knuckle punching Najima in the crowd. Ishikawa/Murakami exchange was fun and nostalgic with Murakamis mugging and Ishikawa still being willing to take some punishment. Match went to the next level with the Ikeda shoot headbutt section. Shuji Ishikawa seemingly trying to drill through Ishikawas face with his head may have been the moment of the match. I did not think they would be able to keep up that level of violence, but the Abe/Murakami section surprisingly delivered thanks to Abes punches causing hardway blood and the violence of Murakamis face kicks and punches. There was also an attempted eyerake that looked like Murakami was really about to rip Abes eye out, so just the right kind of grizzly violent little thing. Abe also may have had the most violent save of the match with his flying face stomp. Great match, delivering plenty of sick violence without overstaying its welcome, and a bunch of these guys pretty much had their best performance in forever here.

Kosuke Sato/Ryuma Sekimo vs. Ali Najima/Hinata Kasai, Fuminori Abe & Takuya Nomura Produce 7/1

Pretty great hard hitting  high adrenaline opening  match like a Fu-Ten or WAR match. Basically they tried to put some scrappy violence into every exchange, along with a few unexpected moments and succeeded. I've not seen Sekimo and Kasai before, but they knew what they had to deliver here. Sekimo seemed a little goofy but he was throwing really violent hands and working a camel clutch like he really wanted to torture the guy. Also liked how he just rammed into Najima with his head. I also really enjoyed Kasais throat jumping outburst towards the end. I like how guys were really trying to crank necks with their headlocks so the way Kosuke Sato snatched a surprise front headlock was pretty great. Nomura was quite the bruiser here also and Kosukes dropkick on the armbar was another great moment. Other highlights include some brain-scrambling headbutts and a straight face punch as well as Najimas face stomping.

Hideki Suzuki vs. Go Shiozaki, AJPW 5/17

I haven't cared about Shiozaki since he adopted the embarassing Fake Okada look, but his banged up performance was pretty good here. The gritty out of nowhere lariat was great. What followed was the usual tour around the ring, made a little better by Suzuki resisting some of Shiozakis attacks. After some mediocre minutes the match got back on track when Suzuki would use the guardrails to hurt Shiozakis taped up ribs. What followed was some nice violent work in which Suzuki took some pages out of the playbooks of Terry Rudge and Johnny Smith. I was even somewhat okay with Shiozakis no-selling comebacks as he looked like such a zombie, and him coming up with a bloody nose and actually starting to put some spirit into his Baba chops was a cool moment. The finishing stretch wasn't super interesting aside from Suzukis comical pedigree, but I did like how Suzuki went back to smashing the fuck out of Shiozakis rib section. I'm a bit lukewarm on this overall as it suffered from typical modern day Japanese big match problems but there was some fun violence here.

HII vs. The Wolf, fight of the ring 1/18/2026

The Wolf's return to pro wrestling is something I have glossed over a bit and I probably need to cover it more. I mostly remember him as a reckless kicker from his WYF days, but he was quite good doing maestros style technical work here, busting out a cool peterson roll amongst other things, and generally looking pretty adept. HII has also become a pretty interesting worker at this point. This didn't really shift into next gear with its intensity, but it was two old technicians doing some fun pro wrestling and that's always right up my ally.

Chon Shiryu vs. Rina Yamashita, Choco Pro 2/25

I'm a shameless sucker for Chon Shiryu, the representative of the 2 coolest martial arts in the world, pro wrestling and kung fu. Yamashita is not super interesting but she is big enough that she can credibly fight against Shiryu, and she has some good power offense including a nice harai goshi. That said the bulk of the match was carried by Shiryus crazy kung fu antics and unique spots. Early minutes had some good hard fought hold for hold wrestling, including Shiryu making sure to put extra torque into a basic wristlock like Pai Mei torturing Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. Shiryu is able to make even a fairly rote strike exchange look interesting with his kung fu poses, he also makes even his basic kung fu strikes look pretty hard hitting. Most of the early parts of the match is the Shiryu show with him busting out crazy transitions and set ups for odd 619s, including a few things I've never seen him do before, he's always coming up with new tricks. He does take a pretty reckless looking bump when Yamashita catches him on an attempted springboard, and later he hits his springboard rider kick to the floor which is a crazy spot from a 47 year old guy. Finishing run had both of them selling damage to their legs when they got their knees up on flying moves and some crazy rollups, which was a lot more interesting than the usual bombfest, and Yamashita coming alive a bit.

2025 Matchguide Week 39

Ali Najima vs Masanori Watanabe, 10/1

Sportiva starts strong into October with the hottest match up in Japanese wrestling! Well, the first couple minutes weren't as good as their previous matches, as they just kinda did generic rookie punishment stuff. But the second half of this is very good with both guys getting insanely stiff and Watanabe trying to break Najimas arm. Watanabe did this arm takedown from a russian tie into an armlock that was Tamon Honda levels of awesome. Worth watching just for that alone.

Masanori Watanabe vs Koji Iwamoto, Sportiva 9/17

Iwamoto had been away from Sportiva for a bit. He was goofing around early, but Watanabe quickly caused him to snap out of it with a hard kick to the shoulder. Iwamato then proceeded to kick the scrap out of Watanabes leg with some mean short kicks and stomps. Pretty good work from Iwamoto, and Watanabe sold the hell out of that leg work. Once Watanabe came to attacking the arm again things were getting intense. Most inspired performance I've seen from Iwamoto in a while, and Watanabe is progressing insanely well considering he's only been wrestling for a few months.

Chihiro Hashimoto vs Mika Iwata, Sendai 9/23

Last time I checked out these two I felt they would make for an amazing singles matchup, and well here we are. This had a solid story, with Hashimoto the newly arrived ace trying to control Iwata who's trying to topple her. Iwatas trump is the fact she can stop Hashimoto in a flash, either with her kicks or an armbar. Hashimoto controlling was pretty good as she's just a force who can grapple and throw people around like a beast, and Iwata does have pretty badass kicks. They peppered in some really cool reversals and moments that showed these two are a class above, along with some sensible stuff like the slick go behinds being important or Hashimotos abdominal stretch. Dug the violent outbursts, like Iwatas KO high kick that stopped Hashimoto in her tracks, or Hashimotos violent takedown and mauling Iwata on the ground. The only letdowns in the match are a) the length, as the match felt a bit dragged out and suffering in pace and b) both of them starting to blatantly no-sell towards the end where they are just taking big moves and getting up. I wanted to see how Iwata would comeback against Hashimotos onslaught and her just kicking out of a pin, getting up and firing back after seemingly being on the verge of defeat moments earlier was really stupid. That was really unfortunate because if it wasn't for that ending taking me out of the match this had some of the best wrestling I've seen all year.

Chon Shiryu & Shin Suzuki vs Makoto & Sayaka, Choco Pro 8/27

I honestly thought this was totally awesome, and one of the most straight forwardly enjoyable matches I've seen all year. If you don't like Choco Pro and their silly mat in a dentists office set up, I can understand, but I thought there was some undeniably great work here. This was a title match and they went all out to deliver. Of course, a big part of why the match works so well is Chon Shiryu, who is a total superstar and just the king of that little room with the way he will bounce around and hit 619s off the window sill and what not. Everyone else delivered too and there wasn't really any let down. Match had everything - fun exchanges, good rudo work from Suzuki and Shiryu, hard hitting, cool submissions, slick technical stuff and nifty transitions, and a finishing run that was packed with cool stuff and never really got into silly territory. We usually see Shiryu as the babyface kung fu hero type, here he is asshole kung fu rudo and he is really good at that too, hitting nasty face scrapes and twisting peoples limbs. Shin Suzuku is also a quite good wrestler, I should probably watch more of him sometime because he was always insanely on point and constantly doing interesting stuff. The women also looked good, Sayaka being more of a slick technical moves and dropkicks type, though she did hit a pretty hard elbow smash at one point, and Makoto kicking people hard and crushing them with knee drops and stomps. And Chon Shiryu was going all out. It's funny how one can watch a ton of him and still be surprised by the things he does. Most importantly everything was timed really well and their pace never let up. It totally works in the confines of that small space and there were a few awesomely slick pin combos and submissions that would make your best WoS technicians sick with jealousy. This kind of no ring almost lucharesuish stuff with a focus on slick pins and submissions is a pretty unique thing for Choco Pro and this was one of the best matches of that type I've seen.

Mari vs Haruka Ishikawa, AWG 2/5

This was insanely good, possibly the best womens match I've seen all year. Ishikawa is the lower ranked wrestler who is just trying to reach the upper echelons of this little promotion. Accordingly, Mari caught Ishikawas energetic charge with a front headlock and then folded her in some cagey matwork. After that Mari proceeded to kick the crap out of her opponent with some rib-cracking stiff kicks. Ishikawa was able to catch Mari in a cool leg submission, and then proceeded to desperately stomp the crap out of that leg. Thought Ishikawa was pretty great as a shark smelling blood in the water and going after Mari with gritty stomps and dropkicks to the head. Maris leg selling was right on the money, really some of the best selling of a bad leg I've seen in a long time. The struggle over Maris crazy submission hold was also great. Whole match was worked in a really sensible way like that, built around Maris stiff kicks, while trying to deal with her bad leg, and Haruka desperately trying to squeeze out a win. Mari going for ground and pound, trying to tap Haruka with a basic side headlock to protect her bad leg was great and felt like something out of a smart 90s AJPW match. I mean it's pretty simple but it's rare to see a worker apply that kind of cleverness in a match nowadays. Great finish, too. Match had a good story, plenty of stiffness and gritty stomps, struggle and intensity were fantastic. Yeah, great stuff.

2025 Wrestling Matchguide Week 38

Ultimate Spider Jr vs SUZAKU, Osaka Pro 5/24

Another very fun match from Osaka Pro. Two athletic guys doing a lot of athletic stuff but with a decent pace and a good layout. SUZAKU is the more young-ish and he seemed a bit generic but good, he had a few kick variations including the Inazuma Leg Lariat which always gets a wrestler on my good side. Spider Jr. continued to look good, I really appreciate that after taking over with a flying neckbreaker and a DDT he continued to go right after SUZAKUs neck, including viciously elbowing him in the neck. That kind of stuff always gets me into a match and SUZAKU to his credit sold that bad neck all the way. This was a bit more spotty than the Oosera match but it never really gets into stupid territory, both guys have cool offense and at 12 minute it's a fun watch.

Super Chino vs HAMATANI, Fukumen Mania 5/3

Super Chino is Chon Shiryu basically going full bore with the Drunken Master stuff, stumbling and wine bottle included. Loved Drunken Master as a kid, so I am all in for it, and if you're gonna give me some light hearted comedy AND give me Shiryus cool diving kicks and martial arts stuff on top of it I am happy. HAMATANI is a game opponent, he can do some solid lucharesu exchanges, has fun kicks and capeoeira kinda shtick... I wouldn't mind seeing more of him. Or Shiryu, for that matter! This is nothing big but it's a fun little match of two unique wrestlers doing their thing.

Virus & Xelhua vs Charles Lucero & Erick Ortiz, Sugehit Produce 9/27

A very good maestros match with some really complex work. I was really happy to see my man Charles Lucero come out and be awesome still at the age of 65. This starts out good with Xelhua and Erick Ortiz putting each other in upper body ties and and then getting more esoteric. Still I thought the Virus/Lucero section was next level as it felt almost like RINGS. Virus was creating sick submissions out of thin air and Lucero adds a lot of personality. Never seen Ortiz before but he did look good. And then they shuffle through all the possible matchups and give us 3 extended falls. This turned out the same way all these maestro matches usually do - a ton of submission work leading to a double pinfall for some reason - but if you're in the mood to watch 25 minutes of this kind of matwork you're in for a treat.

MARU vs ACT, AWG 7/26

A pretty badass little match between two tough heel types. There was some floor brawling which was cool, but they also showcased some nifty wrestling. MARUs use of the Stretch Muffler has to be some of the coolest submission work I've seen in 2025. She also had some really sharp leg attacks including a brutal stomp to ACTs thigh. ACT seems a bit over the hill but she can also bring the good stuff, she had a really slick unique submission into a back stretch, and a cool spinning choke into a suplex that was pretty badass. The most impressive thing about the match was that it was a short undercard match but they still worked hard. It easily could've been just some bullshit but everything here was fresh, there was selling, well worked transitions, at no point did it feel like they were mailing it in, that in itself is a really nice thing to see these days. Nifty finish too, maybe we can get a bigger match between them in the future but for now this was a really good 9 minutes.

Sportiva Wednesday Curry Pro Wrestling 8/13/2025

 Watch

Mikiya Sasaki vs Yacchae Seven, Sportiva 8/13

A fun opening match between two fun wrestlers. It had some jokes, but enough serious wrestling for me to like it, and it made for a pretty entertaining mix. Yacchae Seven is this energetic masked wrestler, his springboard flip senton was pretty impressive, but a lot of this was him leaping into Sasakis atomic drops and getting rolled up in comical ways. Mikiya Sasaki is another guy who worships the Funk brothers. He won't make you forget Crusher Takahashi, but he is pretty solid at what he does, and he brings some fun character touches like how he loves the old school suplex over the ropes. His dropkick to the face was genuinely impressive and this was probably the most solid I've seen him look so far. At 7 minutes they move through it pretty fast. An enjoyable match that is worth a look if you want to have some fun.

Super Taira & Yasu Kubota vs Masanori Kanu Watanabe & Yu Shimizu, Sportiva 8/13

Pretty much 4 cool wrestlers having a cool match. I always look forward to seeing Super Taira, and he once again proved himself to be one of the best technicians around when he grappled with Shimizu. It wasn't showing off, it was Taira being pesky and dominating his opponent, and it was cool to watch. Kubota in the past has looked a little lazy but he was surprisingly on point, despite looking gray like your uncle. He was hitting really hard elbows, and while what he did was simple it never felt like there was a wasted moment when he was in the ring. Everyone who reads my blog should know by now that I really like Watanabe and Shimizu. Shimizu once again proved his salt hitting some of the hardest elbows and having a great exchange with Kubota. Watanabe continues to get better, he blasted Taira with some devastating knees and I really liked that russian legsweep into a heel hook thing he did. Pretty much a match where everyone looked good and was doing something interesting all the time, that didn't go to long but will probably surprise you with how hard they fought. I would look forward to seeing singles matches between any of them coming out of this.

Konaka vs Chon Shiryu, Sportiva 8/13

Two gods of the indy scene meeting in a match... and an SRS rules match no less! SRS means they have to fight on the wooden floor of the bar and entering the ring leads to a countout. Oh, and you can touch an audience member for a rope break. These are two all timers when it comes to fun creative wrestling, and the wrestling on the floor adds a nice dose of insanity. We get the usual cool kung fu kicks and flying around from Shiryu, and the high pitched yelling chops from Konaka, and then they start climbing on the ceiling and using the barstools and doing some crazy flying to the floor... apparently this was a rematch from 11 years prior. I had no idea how they got the idea to deliver this rematch now but it was a spectacle and really delivers everthing you wish. Painful bumps, both guys hanging upside down from the ceiling, Shiryu hitting a kung fu flying kick over a bar stool... I think these two even in a regular match against each other would be dynamite, but this was crazy and fun in the best way.

Ali Najima & Yuta Oya vs Michio Kageyama & Shinya Ishida, Sportiva 8/13

Ali Najima and Yuta Oya continue to be the best story on the Japanese scene this year. This was an incredibly compelling match, with Najima and Oya throwing everything they have trying to beat their more established opponents. After an explosive beginning the veterans were able to slow the pace down, only for things to get heated again when Najima and Oya got the upper hand again. Both Najima and Oya were great here as always. Najima looked like a killer when he was circling around Kageyama kicking him in his bad arm like a shark in the water smelling blood, and he did great job showing the pain in his leg after Kageyama caught him. Oya is such a unique wrestler, he is a powerhouse but also vulnerable, it feels extra mean when he gets blasted with a kick to the face or walks into a sneaky rollup. This was a really ambitious match with multiple layers, but they all stuck to what they do well. And Oya and Najima are making things like a firemans carry or hip throw look cool. I also liked Ishida a lot here, he got blitzed early on but after getting himself together he got pretty evil stomping the hell out of people and even mocking Najimas limp. The week to week progression of the rookies is so satisfying to watch as they keep adding new touches to their game, and the willingness of Najima and Oya to win this match was palpable like in a classic match from the 90s. It really felt like getting a pin on Ishida or Kageyama meant the world to them. It absolutely feels like the best thing going right now and they are just about a year into their career, if they keep progressing like this the next 1-2 years will be insane.

Assorted Ice Ribbon

Kiku vs Tsukasa Fujimoto, Ice Ribbon 4/12/2022

I liked Kiku in the one match I’ve seen of her, and I know Tsukasa is a pretty respectable wrestler, so I decided to check this out. This is at the beginning of Kikus career so she is still taking rookie punishment, i.e. 5 dropkicks from Kiku can’t knock Tsukasa down and so on. However just when she looks hopeless Kiku is able to hit a surprise body slam, allowing her to go for her signature submission, which Tsukusa resists against with all her might. Kiku In a smart move drags Tsukasa to the floor and locks in a figure 4, which Tsukasa sells as actually damaging. This sets up the surprisingly intense second half with both of them slapping the shit out of each other and hitting some hard kicks. Basic stuff but very well done.

Asahi vs Tae Honma, Ice Ribbon 6/11/2022

Pretty different type of match for Ice Ribbon. No comedy or time wasting, instead they grappled and stubbornly went for the armbar. Asahi in particular had lots of slick ways to tie up her opponent and try to bend her arm out of the shoulder, though Honma does also look good. Some really well timed flash submissions and roll ups here, which is kind of the best case scenario for an Ice Ribbon match. There was also a great struggle over a Tiger Suplex at one point. Won’t make you forget ARSION, but it’s a fine unique piece of pro wrestling.

Chon Shiryu vs Kiku, Ice Ribbon 5/6/2023

Another great little match from Chon Shiryu, what are the odds? The man just keeps on delivering every chance he gets. This is pretty rad 7 minute match. It’s almost all Shiryu, though Kiku is cool too. Kiku now has a frying pan that she hits people with for the obligatory once-per-match comedy spot (god I hate Japan sometimes), but Shiryu turns that frying pan against her, hitting Kiku spine-first with the frying pan against the apron in an actually painful looking spot. I really buy that a kung fu master would know how to use a frying pan to hurt someone in unique ways. Shiryu then does a real workmans job working over Kikus spine with nasty elbows and a cool springboard stomp. Shiryu just keeps doing cool shit. Kiku only has two brief comebacks, although they are fun. Finish is fucking great as Kiku get Shiryu down and desperately goes for her signature submission but Shiryu pulls her over, locking in a submission of his own for the tap.

Asuka Fujitaki vs YuuRI, Ice Ribbon 6/8/2024

Really fun 8 minute match that had a lot of good stuff packed into it. Fujitaki is a thickly built girl, who has both fun ways to crash into her opponent as well as some skill. Fujitaki displays some cool submissions, and YuuRI tries to beat her in ratty ways. YuuRI actually has some pretty fun well timed kicks of her own. Apparently Fujitaki has gone under several different names notably as Grizzly Fujitaki and now Asuka Goda, I should probably watch more of her because this was cracking.

Asahi vs Saori Anou, Ice Ribbon 12/31/2022

Really good stuff here, no doubt. Starts really nice with an intense lock up. They move through some actually impressive slick sequences with some cool bridging spots. Asahi eventually gets Anou in an armbar which Anou sells as a big deal and Asahi takes control working over Anous arm. Really nice control segment with well done attempted comebacks and cutoffs. The build from Asahi being firmly in control to the match slipping away from her was really good I thought, as such I didn’t even have a huge problem with her no selling because it gave the sense that she was desperate to maintain control. It was a bit iffy when they did the chest forearms but then Asahi did these cool double handed blows to Anous face and Anou retaliated with a thudding enzuigiri of her own. Last couple minutes actually felt gritty due to Asahi trying her damndest to snap Anous arm. There is some sloppiness and they do get carried away with an assload of nearfalls but that’s joshi sometimes, the build and substance here were a lot better than your typical joshi movesfest though. Thought Asahi looked quite good here, she put some real heft into her forearms and the arm attacks were cool, I wonder what she’s been up t- oh, apparently she died in an accident not long after this. Bummer to say the least.

Taking a look at... Hot Shushu

Chon Shiryu vs Samas (Hot Shushu 5/6/2024)

I’m a big fan of Chon Shiryu, and I’m naturally inclined to check out any match he’s in. Samas is a pretty interesting guy, he’s a tall-ish foreigner with a cool mask and odd agility which allows him to hit some cool looking high kicks. Samas was a bit dainty with his movements at times but he sure looked convincing when has dropping bombs, I can definitely see potential in him, plus I am sucker for guys who look straight out of a 90s Mortal Kombat game. This was a lot like how I would fantasy book a hypothetical Chon Shiryu run in a US TV promotion, really nice fast paced big vs little match with Shiryu hitting his awesome spots including the diving kick to the floor. Samas was really cool to watch in this, lots of cool hurty looking offense without being cliché big man stuff. Cool little match in that dojo,

Kiku vs Banako (Hot Shushu 5/6/2024)

So I was looking through the Hot Shushu highlight videos trying to figure out what match ups look interesting, and I thought this girl Kiku looks cool. Then I look her up on Cagematch and SHE’S 47 YEARS OLD??? And her debut was just in 2021? I have a fascination with wrestlers who start wrestling late, they always seem to have a better mind for wrestling and with guys like Yasushi Sato, Yuta Oya or Hiroki Sakai the genre has produced some greats, so to see someone like that show up in the cosmos of Ice Ribbon is fascinating. And yeah, watching this Kiku is definitely really cool. She has actually hard kicks, and cool submissions. Banako is another one of those wrestlers whose personality is pretty much ‘joyful clown in a world of asskickers’. Banako didn’t strike me as insanely talented – not really having more than a basic dropkick and roll ups – but the contrast with her and Kiku being a more serious asskicker and putting the boots to her with said hard kicks and cool submissions is really fun. Kiku sets herself up for Banako in ways that really help the match too. I’m definitely gonna have to watch more Kiku.

Takahiro Tababa & Tatsuhito Takaiwa vs Samas & Yoshikazu Yokoyama (Hot Shushu 7/20/2024)

Tababa and Takaiwa, what a team. Unfortunately Yokoyama may be one of the worst wrestlers I’ve ever seen, he’s just super low effort to the point where he shows up wrestling in a t-shirt, so this was a little rough. Samas also wasn’t in the match a ton. Takaiwa still looks insanely tough but can barely move. Tababa kicking Samas really hard was pretty fun, and Yokoyama did get it together to at least hit some nice Death Valley Bombs for the finish.

Chon Shiryu vs Kouyo (Hot Shushu 4/7/2024)

Another Chon Shiryu showcase match baby. This was also really cool. Shiryu could just coast and hit his spots, but he strayed from his usual stuff to work an indy main event formula match with his opponent. That means a bit slower pace but we get to see what Shiryu can do, working some cool matwork, attacking Kouyos legs with some nifty holds. He did have some cool parkour spots where he used the walls of this tiny dojo to his advantage in awesome ways. Kouyo is a bit green and bland, but he’s solid enough, he does hit some nice kicks, his 619 setup was cool, although his thigh slappy kick combo was pretty weak, he did sell the leg work though. Pretty insane finish. I love watching Shiryu do his thing.

Daisuke Sekimoto vs Samas, Hot Shushu 2023/7/17

Apparently, this was Samas 3rd match ever, unless he was working some place elsewhere before that Cagematch doesn't know about.  And this is wisely kept very basic. Sekimoto could probably wrestle in his sleep. With him, you always get your test of strengths, your shoulderblocks, your forearm exchange... he has a simple formula that works, and it tends to bore me to death so I can only watch him once every couple years. Samas being the opponent makes things more interesting than usual, since he's actually quite a bit bigger than Sekimoto despite how freakishly large this short Japanese mans chest and shoulders have gotten. Because Samas is bigger and hefty Sekimoto is actually forced to come up with a few different touches and when he hits the deadlift german it's actually impressive. Samas didn't show a ton here, none of the cool stuff he did in the Shiryu match really, but sometimes a 3rd match is just a 3rd match.

5 minute exhibition: Yoshiko Tamura vs Tanny Mouse, Hot Shushu 12/24/2023

It's Christmas and Tamura is dressed as Santa and Tanny is dressed as a reindeer. And well... they work this pretty much exactly as if it were a serious 2005 NEO match or so. Just both of them going really hard, nailing their signatures, not wasting much time with comedy (though Tanny does get her due here and there) All their stuff still looks good and you get the sense either of them could return to in-ring competition and be near top level still. Tanny looked especially slick still, like she had never stopped. And they do it all while dressed in those ridiculous costumes. Too surreal not to talk about this. It was getting awe inspiring when Tanny went for the muscle buster but then the time ran out. What a Christmas dream!

2025 Wrestling Week 11

Hanako Nakamori & Leon vs Crea & Moeka Haruhi, Pure-J 3/9

Really good go-go tag with lots of quality exchanges throughout. Everyone here is really fun to watch. Nakamori still has vicious kicks, Crea is a really fun energetic enforcer booting people in the face, and Leon hasn't lost anything in all these years. I wasn't familiar with Haruhi but she was pretty cool too, she had some really violent double stomps and cool ways to stretch opponents. They bust out some bigger spots than you'd expect from a dojo show and the finish is a damn finish. Real quality stuff, just all 4 of them going hard and it was really cool.

Chon Shiryu & Leon vs Mei Suruga & Baliyan Akki, Choco Pro 2/2/225

This was a MOVEZ~ match but it was a pretty fun one. Shiryu is still really awesome and can bust out awesome exchanges and nifty things like no tomorrow. Enjoyed Leon a lot as always, her team with Shiryu is really random but they have some cool moments together. The cutesy act of Akki and Suruga isn't for me, but they also did some cool stuff especially Suruga. The finish was really cool as the constant double team assisted moves blew back up in their face and it was the kind of nifty touch Shiryu is so damn good at pulling off.

Yuta Oya & Ali Najima vs Konaka & Shinya Ishida, Sportiva 2/26

Another week, another quality match from Sportiva. These 4 guys are some of my favourites in the world to watch so it's really nice to see them all square off in a tag match. First half is really solid, we get to see Konaka grappling with Najima which is always cool, while Najimas skillset is stil basic he will only get better wrestling guys like Konaka on the regular. I like how Shinya Ishida is always a total dick to Oya, fully taking advantage of his blindness to attack him. The 2nd half is really really good - I don't know what got into them, but Ishida suddenly starts wrestling like Yasushi Sato and busting out a bunch of awesome Russian Leg Sweep variations, even a cool Russian Leg Sweep into a submission hold. Konaka would join he madness with some Russian Leg Sweeps of his own and even a Russian Leg Sweep into a pin. Both these guys wrestled Sato a lot, and sadly I don't think we have any of the Sato vs Ishida and only a few Sato vs Konaka matches, but if that was not a distant homage to the Russian Leg Sweep god then I don't know. Some really nifty counters in this, especially those around Oyas signature sidewalk slam and harai goshi. Those are two cool moves to build nifty counters around. Really cool, really unique stuff that would absolutely recommend everyone to check out, don't sleep on this just because it happens in a tiny sportsbar, it's easily some of the best wrestling around.

2024 MOTYC List Update #3

Chon Shiryu vs Keisuke Ishii, Ganbare Pro 7/15/2024

Chon Shiryu big match!! I love Chon Shiryu, and this was a nice chance to see him do his thing. He is still really fast and slick, and his kung fu technique really add a lot to the Japanese big match formula. Initially Keisuke Ishii did not impress me, but he redeemed himself when he started destroying Shiryus mid section with violent looking knees. Ishii dropping Shiryus throat across the rope with a nasty move and then going for a piledriver on the apron made things quite intense. Shiryu pulls off some great transitions as usual that are a level above what you usually see in these matches, and his signature odd angle 619s and diving kicks still rule. Last couple minutes were buil around Shiryu taking crazy bumps, trying to crush Ishiis throat with his flying stomps, and delivering some really great glassy eyed selling as he kept dying and ressurrecting over and over. Could have done with a few nearfalls less, but what the hell, you don’t get to see Shiryu doing matches like this often! I also like that they made a spinning wheel kick into a finisher in 2024.

Super Taira vs Kenta Kosugi, Sportiva 10/30/2024

Really good match that told a great story, was interesting all the way through and had some great wrestling. I really like Super Taira, who has such a diverse skillset. In this case he was facing Kosugi who is like twice his size, so he couldn't do much lucha libre or llaves, so Tairas answer was to just try and rush him with leg kicks. Taira kicking at Kosugi and trying to hurt his legs was simple but really good. Anytime Kosugi fired back, he looked like an absolute bear. I cannot emphasize enough that every single moment in this match mattered and added to the story. I loved the way Kosugi would slap his knees to try as if to try and get some feeling back into it after taking damage. Taira using his agility in interesting ways and trying to grab submissions was really good. There were some really choice counters without being too cute. By the end Kosugi was basically an angry bear mauling Taira with Taira trying to hit a desperation move and get a flash pin or submission. I really like a simplistic wrestling match that ads some interesting touches, and this one really hits thats spot.

Demus vs. Lunatik Xtreme, Zona 23 1/21

I am not super interested in deathmatches at this point, there are only so many idiotic bumps one can see before it gets old, and  I have little interest in seeing guys stand around and rubbing light tubes in each others face. That said the psychotic violence here was really fun with the apocalyptic junkyard bumps. Early brawling could have been better, aside from Demus great elbows there was still a bit much of idle walking around and an exhibitiony feeling to me. Match took a steep upturn when Xtreme started hitting those wild stomps. After some fun comeuppance we get Demus throwing what is pretty much the greatest punch combo I've ever seen in a match and some savage headbutt exchanges which were easily the highlight. I honestly expected the match to go longer so the finish was an amusing surprise. I didn't like it as much as I liked Black Terry vs Wotan or Ricky Marvin from memory, but it was a fun slice of psycho violence.

Mutoha Blog Revival

Yasushi Sato vs. Kenichiro Arai, Mutoha 3/11/2020

Surprise surprise, another very good Yasushi Sato match. Loved the cagey technical action early on. Then we got the usual dose of cool Sato amateur spots, such as an awesome Honda-like double arm suplex into a chokehold, as well as great struggle over Satos finishing hold and a reckless Russian Leg Sweep that left Arai in shambles. Arai was hardly a mat genius but he does his sneaky technically scuzzy heel act very well. I dug how Arai early on worked some neck cranks on Sato after Sato tried to fuck with him. Loved the little punch Arai threw at Satos face and the cool Figure 4 work. Fun finish.

Chon Shiryu & Hiroshi Watanabe vs. Hideya Iso & Osamu Namiguchi, Mutoha 3/11/2020

Fun tag with the old guys looking good as usual doing nifty technical old school work. Shiryu was a lot of fun too, he dialed down the kung fu spots a bit, although when he did kung fu stuff it suited the match and made a cool contrast to the other guys more traditional approach. His grappling and technical work is a lot of fun too and at one point he spin kicked Namiguchi in the face really hard. Namiguchi was okay but didn’t do anything brilliant and you really gotta bring a little more in Mutoha. Watanabe and Iso did their thing and it was cool as always, and Iso even got to pick up a win! We love Iso.

Tanomusaku Toba Documentation #23

MIKAMI & Tanomusaku Toba vs. Daichi Kakimoto & Chou-un Shiryu, DDT 5/23/2007 - FUN

Another JIP match. But we get 5 minutes of total action with Shiryu doing a bunch of awesome stuff and Toba getting ragdolled around. Shiryus whacky kung fu kicks and dives are truly awesome. He also hit this awesome foot stomp off the top of Kakimotos shoulders. Then it was time for Toba to punch Kakimoto in the face and they did some manly exchanges. Can’t ask for much more from a clip like this.

Tanomusaku Toba vs. Daichi Kakimoto, DDT 6/3/2007 – FUN

JIP once again. Common, 2007 Samurai TV editors, give me a complete Toba match! This looked insanely good as it was basically all straight punches, crowbar lariats and ragdoll suplexes. You can watch a lot of Toba stuff but he still surprises you with what he busts out, in this case hitting a cool rana. They reference the finish of the above tag, and the finish of this one is insane.

Tanomusaku Toba vs. Shuji Ishikawa, DDT 2/7/2007 – SKIPPABLE

Well, not all of these can be good. Toba was good as always, punching Shuji in the face, but Shuji was really lame and weak and the match had a shitty run in finish.

Tanomusaku Toba & Munenori Sawa vs. Kota Ibushi & Hoshitango, DDT 8/5/2008 - FUN

Clipped but holy fuck I‘d kill to see this in full. Everyone has boxing gloves and they are beating the shit out of each other. Even Hoshitango is swinging hard and eating huge blows! Toba and Ibushi take turns hitting each other in the face as hard as they can. Then Toba and Ibushi are brawling on the floor. Finally everyone is in the ring and just beating on each other like its real life Super Smash Bros until Toba hits a huge dropkick. God I really hope the uncut version of this is sitting somewhere because this looks like EVERYTHING.

Tanomusaku Toba Documentation #21

Tanomusaku Toba & MIKAMI vs. Poison Sawada & HARASHIMA, DDT King of DDT 2008 - FUN

HARASHIMA was in snakeman facepaint and doing charms here. Sawada and Shima won’t blow you away here but they are a charismatic heel unit  and there are some fun charming spots including MIKAMI getting hypnotized while standing on top of the ladder. SUICIDE BOYZ were about as good as you ever see them here, MIKAMI can make any random move like a springboard back elbow look totally awesome and Toba was kicking and punching people as hard as ever. TOBA even broke out of the snake charms twice and hit one of his stiffest backfists I’ve ever seen. I also appreciate that Sawada looks old and like he doesn’t train anymore but still takes a full force Toba kick to his head. This needed another Toba tag in to push into GREAT territory but for what it is it is an immensely fun little match.

Tanomusaku Toba & MIKAMI vs. Cho-un Shiryu & KUDO, DDT 4/1/2009 - GREAT

This was from a weird theme show where they had all the wrestlers dress up as different nationalities. So Toba and MIKAMI represent Thailand with MIKAMI dressed like a thaiboxer and KUDO doing his New Beijing Pro Wrestling Dragon Achoooo gimmick. So this is thai boxing vs. hong kong movie kung fu match we all were looking for all of our lifes and it’s totally awesome. It works because Shiryu and KUDO are really slick and there are still a ton of stiff strikes in the match. I think the joke was that MIKAMI isn’t skilled enough to be a thaiboxer because he was mostly doing body shots early on, but he hit a pretty brutal jumping knee later. Of course Toba rules coming in and punching and kicking people really hard. Also, nice showcase match for Choun Shiryu, who is also awesome. This was only a slightly bigger finish away from an EPIC rating.

Tanomusaku Toba vs. MIKAMI, DDT 12/29/2006 - GREAT

This was for the Extreme Title and had a rounds ruleset where one round be pro wrestling rules, the next round would be martial arts rule and so on. Pretty smart match that was also brutally stiff. Even during the pro wrestling sections MIKAMI was absolutely leathering Toba with his clotheslines and kicks, for a skinny short guy he can really hit like Tenryu. MIKAMI was really trying to finish the match during the Pro Wrestling Rules section going for flash pins. MIKAMI was more cautious during the Kakutogi sections, trying to contain Toba with takedowns and groundwork. Eventually MIKAMI eats a knee to the face when shooting for a takedown and after that it’s time for Toba to kick his ass. The sections where Toba was blasting MIKAMI with his kicks and fists really felt like a fight to the death as MIKAMI barely survived. There was this great moment where MIKAMI went for a desperate schoolboy but Toba landed on top and rained punches on him from mount, you could just see MIKAMIS body going limp as Toba punched the soul out of him, if it had been martial arts rules it would have been a KO but because it was pro wres rules Toba had to go for a pin. Other neat moments include MIKAMI going for a 619 and getting punched in the face, as well as Toba countering a codebreaker attempt with a nasty elbow. Finish was great too as MIKAMI hit this really uncooperative shoulder dislocating armbreaker move before locking in an Octopus Hold, Mikami knows no martial artist can resist an Octopus Hold. Great match that had top notch selling from Mikami, brutal stiffness and a really well told story.

E-Cosmos: Kansai vs. Style-E 2/21/2010

Yosuke Takii & Kabuki Kid vs. Yutaka & Dyna-Mido

Fun indy opener. Takii is always cool to see and he really palmed and kicked the hell out of Dyna-Mido. Dyna was fun as a plucky young guy with a simple moveset, and Yutaka had a cool hot tag busting out a big headscissor and nasty face dropkick. Kabuki Kid wasn’t much at all but didn’t drag things down. This was short enough and had a good pace to leave you with just enough before you got tired.

Yuki Tanaka vs. Kyosuke Sasaki

Sasaki was doing a face painted gimmick with one glove on his hand and part of a heel faction. A cool match in theory as both these guys have kickpads and aren’t afraid to hit hard, but it was pretty short and to add to that the match had a run in, even though Tanaka quickly unmasked the guy and threw him out. It felt like wasted potential.

Masato Shibata vs. Shigehiro Irie

Young Irie is so low on the totem pole he gets almost squashed Shibata. This had some good chunky boys forearming each other hard and crashing into each other with their blubber stuff and Shibata has some nice gnarly offense, stiff Vader Hammers and huge suplex that Irie bumps big for, but I wanted a bit more. As a 6 minute big boy sprint it was pretty good though.

Kazuhiro Tamura & Masashi Takeda vs. Masanori Ishikura & Takaku Fuke

This was more like it. A slick shooty indy tag with plenty of fun smooth mat scrambles. It’s too bad we don’t see Ishikura much because the guy is really good and can hang with a pair of Tamura trainees on the mat no problem. I’m usually down on Fuke but he had his working boots on and let his opponents look really good. Takeda looked really good here, it’s regrettable he didn’t do clean wrestling more often because his knee strikes and suplexes are fantastic. The ending with Ishikura and Tamura wailing away at each other with Ishikura clocking Tamura with nasty headbutts was hard as all hell. Really enjoyable fast paced match, absolutely worth watching.

Tadanobu Fujisawa & Shoichi Uchida vs. Choun Shiryu & Ken Ohka

This had a lot of zany heel stuff and run ins from heel faction on Shiryu/Ohkas side. It was effective but it prevented much wrestling from happening. Heel antics aside Shiryu was awesome here as usual and probably salvaged the match with his brilliant kicks. The guy is just too cool flying into the scene to Kung Fu kick people in the face and hit odd 619s. His brief exchange with Uchida was really cool and I bet a 7 minute match between the two would be absolutely dynamite. Uchida brings some cool touches, I really liked his Oklahoma Stampede where he cleared the other guy off the apron, his big emerald fusion and dropkick to the back of the head etc. I was hoping to see Fujisawa kick some ass but he barely got to do anything although he did hit his awesome looking knee at one point. Ohka was pretty much a big nothing aside from his kooky getup. It was still a good match with Uchida and Shiryu being absolutely worth seeing.

Assorted Mr. Gannosuke Produce

GENTARO vs. Kazuhiro Tamura, Mr. Gannosuke Produce 3/31/2011

Really good match which felt like a cross of an 80s New Japan shooter vs. Wrestler match and a modern indy match in the best ways. Gentaro punking out the shooter with a hard judo slam and tight gator roll to start was great. I am used to Tamura being kind of pedestrian, so him being really aggressive and chipping away at Gentaros legs with stiff kicks was a pleasant surprise. Gentaro continued to be the king of the mat by making the usual leglocks compelling with his counters. Gentaros leg selling was excellent and the build to the Sharpshooter had a number of sweet moments. Also loved Gentaros desperation frankensteiner which was set up very well. Tamuras stuff looked good and he constantly went for the leg. Fantastic stuff and Gentaro continues to prove how good he is.

Choun Shiryu vs. Masashi Takeda, Mr. Gannosuke Produce 9/5/2009

This was a No Rules match where both guys end up bleeding. Takeda being a death match guy brings a barbedwire bat and a bag of trash, and Shiryu being a Chinese martial artist brings a staff, frying pan and jug of beer. Shiryus Hong Kong movie strikes are so much fun and his spots are brilliant, and Takeda cutting him with a scissor made this feel like a slightly more psycho martial arts movie. Shiryu isn‘t afraid to spin kick you in the face or 619 you from odd angles. Also the frying pan shots may have looked more painful than the barbedwire bat, and Shiryu took some really nasty bumps. Really really fun match largely thanks to Shiryu.

GENTARO vs. DAISUKE, Mr. Gannosuke Produce 12/9/2010

Complete GENTARO show. Daisuke is perfectly average, but Gentaro does just one neat thing after another in this. His matwork was like Dick Murdoch with a touch of Fujiwara. That may sound weird but it was really good. He then proceeded to take DAISUKEs arm apart and bust out some nifty counters. DAISUKE isn‘t great but he has solid offense and sells the arm work very well. Recommended watching just for all the cool shit GENTARO was doing.

STYLE-E Summer E Impact in West Chofu 7/22/2007

 Watch

 Masashi Takeda vs. Naoki Matsumoto

Nice to see Pro Wrestling DREAMERS boy Matsumoto show up. This was a nice match between two guy with amateur backgrounds. It was a pro-style match but they both displayed some swift amateur movements, like very high level on the basic go behinds on the mat etc. At one point Takeda has a really nice shot underneath for the ankle hold. Matsumoto did a solid job working Takedas arm and he's a really nifty worker in general. I really liked how when Matsumoto got entangled in the loose ropes Takeda immediately went for the kill by hitting a spear. Nice opening match.

Keita Yano & Chojin Yusha G Valion vs. Yuta Yoshikawa & Tomohiko Hashimoto - GREAT

Valion and Hashimoto weren't much in this match, but they didn't stink it up either. Whenever Yano and Yoshikawa faced off it was nice, scrappy BattlARTS style action with both guys really peppering each other with kicks and open hands. Hashimoto is a slug but at least he hit hard when it was time to put a beatdown on Yano. Yano bumped big and ate some good punishment, he had a really pretty dropkick too. Thankfully, the finish was Yano vs. Yoshikawa again and it was really good pushing this into GREAT territory as Yano busted out cool STOs and his awesome bridging choke submission. Really nice stuff and didn't overstay its welcome.

Kyosuke Sasaki vs. Masanori Ishikura

Nice to see Ishikura getting a showcase match. This started with some really nice slick U-Style grappling before Sasaki upped the asshole moves and started grinding Ishikuras face. Ishikura fired back in style hitting a big dropkick followed by a massive dive over the top to the floor. After that the match was more on the pro style side but it ended up being really good action full of hard fought submission attempts. Ishikura certainly looked like he could kick and grapple with the best of them, and him busting out stuff like a Kido Clutch was really cool. Crafty finish where Sasaki is able to lock in an achilles hold, Ishikura looks in pain and tries to kick his way out only for Sasaki to turn it into a heel hook and tap him. Really enjoyed this one.

Kazuhiro Tamura & Masato Shibata vs. Kabuki Kid & Chon Shiryu & Bungee Takada

That heel trio is scummy as hell. But, because they worked a good structure with the heels working rudo tactics and building to hot tags, the match ended up working. Shiryu was by far the standout and looked great. When the two goons immediately started brawling with the faces he just stood in the ring and kept smiling and waving his flag like a prick. Then he hit this awesome flying kick to the floor. His kicks and kung fu spots are so cool and were a consistent highlight throughout the match. Kabuki Kid can hit a decent uppercut and thrust kick so that's all I need to be happy. Bungee Takada ain't much good but he manages to not stink up the match. Both Tamura and Shibata got hot tags, I really liked Tamura who's really quick and sharp at this point. Shibata is a tubby guy in a yellow singlet that says SHIBATA TIME and he just squishes people with his blubber. Shibata ends up turning against Tamura though giving the rudos an easy win. At least the fake Kabuki sprayed Tamura with some mist to make it memorable. Still, Shiryus performance here was insanely cool to check out, and the match was well worked.

2022 MOTY Project Update #1

Hitamaru Sasaki & Kodai Nozaki vs. Minoru Tanaka & Soma Watanabe, Kyushu Pro 4/23/2022

Once again, Kyushu Pro produces a really fun shootstyle match. This was all about my boy Kodai Nozaki who has the thickest legs in the world and is a machine here with his vader hammers and big throws. He really forces the GLEAT boys to get competitive, and he can grapple too. I love that his scarf hold is a credible nearfall simply because Nozaki is so massive. Sasaki did some slick grappling in the first half. This is all about the last 4 minutes or so, though. Watanabe showed good instinct going for Nozakis leg, but Nozai caught him and then proceeded to absolutely nuke him like it was a BattlARTS match. Awesome stuff. Tanaka is the blandest wrestler of all time doing the same stuff for the last 25 years, but he was okay here and got out of the way when Sasaki and Watanabe did a hot finish. Good shit and my man Nozaki deserves more.

I'll start by talking about the problems with this match. It was a bit silly, a bit too long, and there was some sloppiness mostly caused by them wrestling on this pillow mat where you probably don't have good footing. Aside from all that, it was a really good match and another case for Takanashi being the one good big match worker in Japan. Starts with some nice grappling, but they soon move to the meat of the match. Takanashis vicious matwork vs. Shiryus awesome Jackie Chan moves. Shiryu really knew how to bounce around that little room and those windows. The back roll handspring through the window was just awesome and so were all the diving kicks and stomps, and the bounce of the ceiling into a reckless headbutt has to be among the most insane things I've seen in a while. Takanashis style is a mix of sadistic Fuchi leg stretches and innovative stuff that works like using the stool on the leg. As I said there is some sloppiness and the match goes a bit long, but they both sold their butts off, built really well to some big spots and kept me enthralled in the match the whole way, there was never a moment where I said "fuck this" which is quite rare for 2022 wrestling.
